Double-OT Golden Goal Sends UC Irvine to 2-1 Win at Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Elizabeth Hutchison scored a golden goal in the 103rd minute Friday night to carry the UC Irvine women's soccer team to a 2-1 win at Cal Poly, claiming the Big West Conference opener in Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
The Anteaters (6-3-3 overall) struck first in the 30th minute, when Sydney Carr lobbed a cross in from the right side of the box to Shelby Lee, who headed the ball into the near side steps in front of the left post.
Cal Poly (5-6-1) would equalize in the 88th minute, as redshirt freshman Georgina Stiegeler descended upon a blocked Megan Abutin shot, sending the rebound into the left side of the net from a few yards out.
Tallied with 2:16 remaining until regulation full time, Stiegeler's goal ranks as the second-latest equalizer in school history, trailing only Brooke Flamson (1:52 from 90') in a 2001 game at Pepperdine.
During the initial overtime, Mustang sophomore goalkeeper Sophia Brown saved a 93rd-minute shot by Reema Bzeih, and sophomore Senna Brennan shot high in the 96th.
Then in the opening minute of the second extra period, Ashley Kirchick forced a save by Maddie Newsom, and Sydney Knauer had another shot blocked by the Anteater back line.
Two minutes later, Grayson Galbraith recovered a blocked Hutchison shot, tapping the rebound back to Hutchison.
Hutchison maneuvered a few yards to the top of the penalty area before blasting a strike just beyond the outstretched reach of Brown, inside the far post for the sudden-death game-winner.
Other Mustang shots on frame during the evening came from freshman Heather Huene (32'), sophomore Jessica Johnson (55'), Abutin (58' and 72') and Brennan (79'). Brown also made stops in the 30th, 48th and 78th minutes.
Cal Poly will return to Spanos Stadium to host UC Riverside at 12 noon Sunday. The game against the Highlanders is also Youth Day, with free admission for all kids 13-and-under.
