
Mustangs Sweep Highlanders for Eighth Straight Win

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Torrey Van Winden posted 15 kills and 11 digs to lead Cal Poly to its eighth straight win as the Mustangs (13-2, 3-0) swept UC Riverside Saturday at Mott Athletics Center (25-20, 25-18, 25-23).
Cal Poly out-hit the Highlanders (8-7, 0-3) in each of the three sets.
The match began with a back-and-forth first set early on. The Mustangs were able to stretch it to a 16-10 lead after a 6-2 run. UC Riverside would get it back to as close as 23-20 before Cal Poly scored two straight points to win the set.
The second set saw the Mustangs get out to a quick 10-3 lead. The Highlanders closed the gap 13-9 before another Cal Poly run extended the lead to 20-13. They would not look back from there; going on to win the set 25-20.
The Mustangs had their highest hitting percentage of the match in the second set, hitting .364.
Cal Poly scored the first seven points of the third set before UC Riverside got on the board. With the Mustangs up 18-13, the Highlanders scored five straight points to get it back to within one. Cal Poly would score three straight points before another UC Riverside run would give them their first lead of the set 22-21.
After a Mustang timeout, Cal Poly scored three straight points, followed by a Highlander point. An Adlee Van Winden kill ended the set and the match.
Adlee finished with nine kills and 10 digs. Senior setter Taylor Nelson led the Mustangs in assists with 38. Seniors Raeann Greisen and Savannah Niemen posted seven kills apiece.
Cal Poly goes back on the road next weekend. They face Long Beach State on Friday followed by CSUN on Saturday. Both matches start at 7 p.m.
