
Mustangs Conclude Bay Area Matches

STANFORD/BERKELEY, Calif. – The Cal Poly beach volleyball team went 1-3 over the weekend, as it picked up a 4-1 win against Pacific, but fell to No. 13 Stanford 4-1, No. 14 Cal 3-2 and Saint Mary's 3-2.
The Mustangs kicked off their first match against Pacific, where Emily Sonny and Hannah Hubbard pushed Lexi Elman and Andie Shelton to three sets and came out with a win 14-21, 21-12, 15-6 at the No. 1 spot.
At the No. 2 spot, Raeann Greisen and Heather Pembroke fell to Katrin Gotterba and Maycie LaBass 23-21, 21-15.
Brayden and Taylor Gruenewald moved up from the No. 5 spot to the No. 4 spot and beat Janie Feldsher and Alex Holt 21-13, 21-15.
Holland Boege and Dora Beilin moved up from the exhibition spot to the No. 5 spot and beat Ashlyn Fleming and Skylar Wine in a three set match, 19-21, 21-17, 15-8.
After a 4-1 win, the Mustangs competed in their second match of the day against No. 13 Stanford.
Sonny and Hubbard picked up a point at the No. 1 spot, as they beat Kathryn Plummer and Jenna Gray 21-18, 21-17.
Van Winden and Gorman fell to Ivana Vanjak and Payton Chang 21-11. 21-16, while Greisen and Pembroke pushed Catherine Raquel and Shannon Richardson to three sets, but fell 21-16, 22-24, 15-10.
Taylor and Brayden Gruenewald fought Morgan Hentz and Caitlin Keefe in the No. 4 spot, but fell after three sets 21-15, 18-21, 15-10, while Beilin and Boege fell to Courtney Bowen and Kat Anderson 21-14, 21-10.
Savannah Niemen and Shannon Fouts played in the exposition match, where they won both of their sets.
The Mustangs started off their second day of matches against Saint Mary's, where were defeated in a close 3-2 match.
Sonny and Hubbard were defeated by Lindsey Knudsen and Payton Rund at the No. 1 spot 21-13, 22-20, while Greisen and Pembroke were beat in a three set match by Emily Bible and Sarah Chase 13-21, 22-20, 15-10 at the No. 2 spot.
Van Winden and Gorman picked up a win for the Mustangs after beating Mary Hernandez and Lindsey Calvin 21-13, 21-12.
The Gruenewalds pushed another three set match, but couldn't hold on, as they were beat by Alexis Salmons and Alexsa Parker 22-20, 14-21, 15-13.
Beilin and Boege picked up another point for the Mustangs after beating Dominique Dodd and Sienna Young at the No. 5 spot 21-15, 21-15.
Following the Mustangs' match against Saint Mary's, the team went to Palo Alto, Calif., to take on No. 14 Cal, where they fell 3-2.
Sonny and Hubbard beat Bryce Bark and Mia Merino 21-11, 21-14 on court one, giving them a 3-1 record over the weekend.
Grace Campbell and Olivia Rodberg beat Raeann Greisen and Heather Pembroke at the No. 2 spot 21-13, 22-20.
Van Winden and Gorman beat Jessica Gaffney and Camille Stepanof 21-16, 21-15 at the No. 3 spot.
Gruenewalds were defeated 21-12, 21-17 by Nicole Anderson and Iya Lindahl 21-12, 21-17 while Beilin and Boege were beat by Teya Neff and Bridget Gustafson 22-20, 21-18.
The Mustangs are now 2-4 on the season and 1-0 in conference play. Cal Poly will be back on the sand on Saturday March 11 and 12 to take on Georgia State, LSU and Florida International University at Manhattan Beach.
