STOCKTON, Calif. – Junior right-hander Erich Uelmen allowed one earned run and four hits over 7 2/3 innings with a career-high 10 strikeouts, but received no run support as Pacific defeated Cal Poly 2-0 in the opener of a three-game non-conference baseball series Friday night at Klein Family Field.
Uelmen (1-1) threw 115 pitches and one of the four walks he issued came around to score a run in the fifth inning. The other Tiger run came courtesy of catcher's interference in the eighth.
With the loss, Cal Poly falls to 1-4, losing four straight since a season-opening 6-4 triumph at Cal. Pacific evened its mark at 2-2.
Cal Poly produced two scoring opportunities in the third and eighth frames, loading the bases with two outs both times. Kyle Marinconz grounded out to shortstop in the third and Nick Meyer's soft liner to shortstop was caught inches above the infield.
For the second straight game, Cal Poly was held to just five hits. Josh George collected a single and double and Kevin Morgan also had a double.
Pacific's four hits were singles by four different hitters.
The win went to Tiger sophomore right-hander Shelby Lackey (1-1), who pitched six scoreless innings and allowed four hits and two walks with nine strikeouts. Vince Arobio pitched two frames for his first save.
Cal Poly struck out 14 times, one day after Stanford struck out 15 Mustangs.
The Mustangs have won 16 consecutive series against the Tigers over the past 17 years.
Second game of the series will be played Saturday at 2 o'clock with junior southpaw Kyle Smith on the mound for Cal Poly, facing Pacific senior right-hander Will Lydon.
