STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford pitchers struck out 15 Cal Poly hitters and held the Mustangs to one hit in the first six innings en route to a 5-2 victory in a non-conference baseball game Thursday night at Sunken Diamond.
The loss dropped Cal Poly, playing its first four games this season against Pac-12 foes, to 1-3. Stanford improved to 2-2.
Starter Kris Bubic (1-1) struck out 11 in 6 2/3 innings for the win, coming out of the game after giving up two runs and three hits in the seventh. Closer Colton Hock struck out in the ninth for his first save.
Cal Poly scored its two runs in the seventh when Brett Binning drew a bases-loaded walk and Nick Meyer came home on a wild pitch.
Kyle Marinconz singled with two outs in the fifth inning for Cal Poly's first hit of the game. The Mustangs also opened the seventh and ninth with two singles.
Stanford scored a run in the second inning and four more in the fourth. Left fielder Quinn Brodey broke open a 2-0 contest with a three-run home run.
Catcher Alex Dunlap and second baseman Duke Kinamon sparked Stanford's 10-hit offensive attack, each with three hits. One of Kinamon's hits was a double. Brodey added two hits.
Stanford now leads Cal Poly 47-6 in the all-time series which began in 1949.
Thursday's game was a makeup of Monday's contest scheduled for Baggett Stadium but postponed due to rain.
Cal Poly's five singles were by five different players.
Cal Poly opens a three-game non-conference series Friday night at Pacific (1-2), with junior right-hander Erich Uelmen (1-0, 3.18 ERA) on the mound for the Mustangs.
