Lane Leads 3 Cal Poly Place Winners at Reno Tournament of Champions

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly sophomore Tom Lane placed second at 197 pounds while 174-pounder Matt Wilhelm and 285-pounder Spencer Empey both finished sixth at the Reno Tournament of Champions on Sunday inside the Reno Events Center.
Lane (pictured at right) won four of his five bouts, reaching the championship final with a pair of 16-0 technical falls and two decisions before dropping a 16-4 major decision to Michael Macchiavello of North Carolina State.
Lane, now 8-3 on the year, earned three four-point near falls and one two-point near fall in his first match, all in the first period, followed by two four-point near falls and a trio of two-point near falls in his second bout for another technical fall in the third period.
In the quarterfinals, Lane garnered a takedown and escape in the first period, an escape and takedown in the second period and riding time in the third for the 7-3 decision. He recorded two takedowns, four escapes and riding time for his 10-6 win in the semifinals.
Lane could muster just four escapes in the finals.
Empey won by technical fall and decision to reach the quarterfinals, then fell 21-9 to Amar Dhesi of Oregon State. After advancing with two no-contests in the wrestlebacks, Empey fell 12-7 to Malik McDonald of North Carolina State in the bout for fifth and sixth place.
At 174, Wilhelm lost his opening bout, 8-6, to Brandon Martino of Fresno State, then won five consecutive matches in the wrestlebacks, two by fall, en route to his sixth-place finish. He pinned Christian Perez of Umpqua College in 1 minute, 43 seconds, and led 9-0 before pinning Colton Clingenpeel of North Dakota State in 3:49.
Joshy Cortez was 3-2 at 149 pounds while redshirt Seville Hayes also posted a 3-2 mark at 285. Jett Moy (157 pounds) and Sohrab Movahedi (184) both split four matches.
Mustang 141-pounder Colton Schilling did not wrestle due to injury.
As a team, Cal Poly finished tied for ninth palce with Fresno State, each with 51.5 points. North Carolina State claimed the team title with 192 points, followed by Wyoming with 140 and Missouri with 106. There were 57 teams in the field.
Cal Poly will compete in the Midlands Championship on Dec. 29-30, to be held at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Il., just outside Chicago.
