
Cal Poly Finishes Second in Cal Poly Invitational

ARROYO GRANDE, Calif.— Santa Clara added three strokes to its first-round lead and captured the Cal Poly Invitational by nine strokes over Cal Poly on Sunday at Cypress Ridge Golf Course.
Led by co-runners-up Kyleigh Moreno and Marni Murez, the Broncos posted s four-person 300 for a 22-over-par 598 total on the 6,011-yard, par-72 course.
Moreno, the first-round leader with a 70, carded a 77 Sunday while Murez climbed from 12th place to second with her 70. Both finished with three-over-par 137 totals, one shot behind Samantha Martirez of Cal Baptist (73-73–146).
Cal Poly golfers occupied five of the next six positions on the leaderboard, including a pair of individuals not competing for the team.
Desiree Gillaspy (pictured above) posted another 74 for a 148 total and fourth place while Jamie Binns, Mallory Muehlbauer and Caroline Cantlay all shared fifth place with 151 totals. Muehlbauer and Cantlay carded 75s Sunday while Binns posted a 76.
Tiffany Cha, competing as an individual along with Cantlay, recorded an 81 for a 153 total and ninth place.
Cal Poly finished with a 31-over-par 607 total after a 303 Sunday. Third place went to Cal Baptist at 618, followed by CSUN (634), CSU Bakersfield (641) and Holy Names (647).
Holy Names golfer Courtney Newport carded a hole-in-one on the 129-yard par-3 fourth hole and finished with a 75 for a 155 total and 11th place.
Cal Poly's other scoring golfers were Sophie Bergland with a 78 for a 158 total and 18th place, and Jamie Harada with an 82 for a 161 total and 27th place.
As individuals, Sienna Scibird finished in a tie for 20th place with a 159 total after rounds of 89 and 79 while Meridith Hirsch claimed 42nd place with rounds of 88 and 82 for a 170 total.
Gillaspy finished fourth in par-3 scoring at even par while Cantlay was first in par-4 scoring at even par. Muehlbauer was tied for first in par-5 scoring at minus-three.
Newport and Cha both carded eagles while Binns and Moreno shared first place with seven birdies. Gillaspy was second in pars with 26.
The Cal Poly Invitational concludes the fall portion of the Mustangs' 2017-18 schedule. Cal Poly returns to action Feb. 12-13 at the Gold Rush hosted by Long Beach State at the El Dorado Park Golf Course.
