SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly sophomore Jessica Johnson tallied a brace, and redshirt freshman Georgina Stiegeler also scored on Friday night, as the underclassmen duo led the Mustangs to a 3-2 Big West Conference win over the Long Beach State soccer team in Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
The Mustangs seized an early lead in the ninth minute, when junior Chelsea Barry lofted a pass from the right side (well above the box) to the far post, where sophomore Megan Demijohn headed the ball over to Johnson for her third goal of the season.
Long Beach State equalized in the 21st minute when Rola Badawiya pounced on a rebound of a dropped ball inside the box, capitalizing for her third goal this year.
The 49ers took the lead just under four minutes from halftime, as Nadiyah Siqueiros found Makayla Soll for a left-footed blast into the right corner from 18 yards out.
Six minutes into the second half, however, senior midfielder Emily Hansen weaved a through ball ahead on a breakaway to Stiegeler, who released her equalizing shot just before a collision with LBSU goalkeeper Imani McDonald. (McDonald had come on for starter Mia Hummel at halftime.)
Johnson then returned in the 56th minute to give the Mustangs (6-9-1, 1-4-0) the lead for good, heading in a corner from senior Megan Abutin at the near post for her sixth career goal.
The 49ers (7-5-2, 1-2-1) continued to attack, with a 9-6 edge in overall shots after the break — including one last attempt that almost forced overtime in the final seconds — but Cal Poly held on to pick up all 3 points.
Sophomore goalkeeper Sophia Brown made six saves for the Mustangs, her most since 10 against Oregon on Sept. 3.
True freshman Danielle Anderson, who played all 90 minutes, added two shots in the victory, while Hansen, who also had a complete-game effort, moved into sole possession of No. 7 in school history for career starts (69).
Abutin now has 22 assists for her career, No. 17 nationally among all active Division I players and just two back of tying the school record.
Johnson also placed another shot on goal (16', saved by Hummel), and junior Stephanie Magellan also forced McDonald into a 70th-minute save.
The Mustangs will return to Spanos Stadium for Senior Night on Thursday, Oct. 19, hosting Cal State Fullerton (9-3-2, 2-1-0) at 7 p.m.
