ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Sophomore goalkeeper Simon Boehme registered four saves Friday afternoon, but a 15th-minute goal by Air Force midfielder Tucker Bone stood as the difference as the Cal Poly men's soccer program opened New Mexico's TLC Plumbing, Heating and Cooling Invitational with a 1-0 defeat.
Dropping its second one-goal decision in as many matches, Cal Poly (0-3-0) outshot Air Force (1-1-0) 13-10, but placed just two attempts on target.
Making just his second collegiate start, Boehme was pressed into a fourth-minute save from Falcons forward Abinadi Samayoa and Air Force midfielder Luis Martinez fired wide of the right post just three minutes later.
In the 14th minute, however, Bone broke through the Cal Poly backline. Boehme stopped Bone's initial one-versus-one shot attempt, but Bone tapped in the rebounded ball to place Air Force up 1-0.
At the other end of UNM Soccer Field, Cal Poly produced the same number of shot attempts during the first half as New Mexico (seven), but failed to record an attempt on target.
The Mustangs opened the second half with three shot attempts inside the opening five minutes and chalked up their first shot on target in the 66th when freshman midfielder Christian Enriquez found freshman forward Sebastian Herran (top) in the penalty area with a free kick. Herran's header, however, was collected by Air Force goalkeeper Jake Schenk.
Six minutes later, senior defender Kody Wakasa blistered a shot from 30 yards that was gloved over the crossbar by Schenk.
Cal Poly's best opportunity to equalize late occurred 56 seconds from full time after junior forward Adam Olsen drew a foul at the top of the Air Force penalty box. Mustang senior forward Justin Dhillon, however, drove a shot over the crossbar.
The Mustangs close a four-match road trip against New Mexico on Sunday, Sept. 4 at 5 p.m. PT.
