Mustang Volleyball Beats UC Davis in Five

SAN LUIS OBISPO – The Cal Poly volleyball team picked up its second win of the weekend after beating UC Davis 3-2 Saturday night.
The Mustangs pushed Davis to five sets, 20-25, 25-23, 21-25, 25-21, 15-8, advancing them to 15-8 overall and 8-4 in the Big West Conference.
The Mustangs got the match off to a slow start, as they gave the first two points of set one to the Aggies. Cal Poly tied the score up at 17-17 and then at 18-18, but Davis never let them take the lead.
Set two was the closest set for both teams, although the Mustangs came out with the win, they were neck and neck with the Aggies. The teams tied the score up eight times and had three different lead changes. Neither team was able to keep more than a three-point lead.
Tied at 1-1, the Mustangs went into their third set putting up a fight but could not keep up with the Aggies. Davis scored the first point of the set but the Mustangs quickly tied it up, as they did three more times, and taking the lead four times. Tied at 12-12, Davis took the lead for the rest of the set.
The Mustangs were the strongest in set four, as they went on a 6-0 run before the Aggies scored their first point. Cal Poly maintained the lead the whole set, tying the match at 2-2.
With 17 kills, Gruenewald set her new season high.
Junior Taylor Nelson, who is also the Big West Conference's leader in assists, put up 55 of the teams 67.
The Mustangs had five total blocks compared to the Aggies 15. Junior Savannah Niemen led the team with three.
Sophomore Katherine Brouker led the team in digs with 24 of the team's 84.
Cal Poly had a .230 attack percentage compared to Davis' .241.
