
Cal Poly Claims Second Place in Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate

PALM DESERT, Calif. -- Charging to within one stroke of the lead, the Cal Poly women's golf team settled for second place in the 12-team Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate on Sunday at the Classic Club.
Starting the final round in third place, four strokes behind second-round leader Santa Clara, Coach Sofie Aagaard's Mustangs were within one stroke of the Broncos with about four holes to play.
Santa Clara, however, pulled away with a final-round 292 total and the team title with a 54-hole 882 aggregate, five shots ahead of the runner-up Mustangs (887), who carded a 293 Sunday,
Third place went to UC Riverside at 889 and Hawai'i finished fourth at 892.
Four Mustangs finished in the top 20, led by Sophie Bergland with a final-round 74 for a 220 total, a career best for 54 holes, and fifth place.
Mallory Muehlbauer carded a final-round 73 for a 221 total and a tie for sixth place while Jamie Binns (pictured above) matched par with a 72 for a 222 total and a tie for 10th place.
Desiree Gillaspy checked in with a 74 for a 224 total and a tie for 15th place while Meridith Hirsch posted a 78 for a 238 aggregate and a tie for 42nd place.
Competing as an individual, Sadie Strain finished in a tie for 15th place with a 224 total after recording a two-under-par 70, the best round of the day and a career best. Chomchana Phuchanbanchrob of CSUN also carded a 70 Sunday.
Individual medalist was Annie Freman of Santa Clara with rounds of 70, 68 and 72 for a 210 total, six shots ahead of Isabella Leung of Hawai'i and Kamonwan (Poy) Prasurtwong of Southern Utah.
Cal Poly returns to action Oct. 10-11 at the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational hosted by Seattle University at the Tacoma Country Club in Tacoma, Wash.
