
Loyola Marymount Roars Back to Life, Defeats Cal Poly in Four Sets

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Cal Poly volleyball team opened its matchup against Loyola Marymount with a convincing opening set victory, but the Lions collected each of the next three sets to down the Mustangs in four sets on Saturday afternoon inside the Mott Athletics Center. Cal Poly freshman Adlee Van Winden (11 kills) and sophomore outside hitter Raeann Greisen (10) combined for 21 kills during the loss.
LMU's Sarah Sponcil led all attackers with 15 kills, Jamie Lea added 12 kills and Hannah Tedrow amassed a match-best 41 assists in the victory. Cal Poly slips to 8-3 this season, while the Lions improve to 8-3 overall.
The Mustangs used a .522 attack percentage in the opening set to overwhelm the Lions and win the first, 25-15. Van Winden led the way with six kills for Cal Poly, including sending home three of the four final kills for the Mustangs in the initial set.
LMU found life in the second set, as it compiled a .448 hitting percentage compared to only .214 for Cal Poly. Sponcil led the charge with four second-set kills for the Lions, while Mustang senior outside hitter Hannah Schleis sent home four kills during the 25-18 victory for LMU. With LMU leading the second set, 24-18, Sponcil's kill sealed the deal and knotted the match at one apiece.
The Mustangs led the fourth set, 11-6 after a kill by sophomore middle blocker Caihla Petiprin, but the Lions – on the strength of six fourth-set kills from Sponcil – took charge and wiped away the deficit and grabbed the lead back at 18-17. Sponcil collected the next four kills for the Lions, and after a kill by Petiprin, LMU led 24-21. Jennifer Casillas sent home a kill for the Lions to take the set, 25-21, and the match in four sets.
Overall, Cal Poly hit .203 on the afternoon, while the Lions used a .195 attack percentage (.448 in the second set) in victory. Cal Poly sophomore setter Taylor Nelson led the Mustangs with 38 assists, Schleis produced nine kills and Petiprin chipped in with eight. Mustang senior libero Nicole Kessler led all players with 18 digs.
Cal Poly (8-3) begins Big West Conference play next Friday when visiting No. 12 Hawai'i with a match scheduled for 10 p.m. PT. Live stats will be available for the match through GoPoly.com.
