SANTA CLARA – Senior goalkeeper Wade Hamilton chalked up two saves, but the Cal Poly men's soccer team – looking to produce the program's best start to a season since 1995 – sustained its first loss of 2015 with a 1-0 defeat versus Santa Clara at Buck Shaw Stadium on Sunday evening.
Unbeaten through the opening four matches of the season entering action Sunday, Cal Poly (3-1-1) was outshot just 7-6. In the first meeting between the two programs since Sept. 10, 2000, Santa Clara's goal marked the first time Cal Poly had trailed at any point in 2015 and was just the third goal the Mustangs had conceded in 470 minutes this season.
A Santa Clara foul inside its own penalty area just 31 seconds into action resulted in Sunday's first scoring opportunity, but Mustang senior midfielder Chase Minter saw his penalty attempt saved by Broncos goalkeeper Kendall McIntosh.
The Mustangs outshot Santa Clara 5-3 in the opening half, but the penalty attempt counted as Cal Poly's lone shot on target.
Hamilton was forced into just one save in the first half, but the Broncos produced the game winner seven minutes into the second half with forward Alfred Edmonds collecting a rebound and scoring his first goal of 2015.
The Mustangs enjoyed just one additional shot on frame as freshman forward Jared Pressley was stopped by McIntosh in the 75th minute.
Cal Poly completes a two-match road trip with a Friday, Sept. 18 game at No. 8 UCLA. Kickoff at Drake Stadium, where Cal Poly is 2-0-1 in its last three visits, is 7 p.m.
