WACO, Texas – For the second straight game, Cal Poly outhit Baylor. And, for the second day in a row, the Mustangs lost to the Bears. By the same score.
Baylor overcame a 6-5 deficit with two unearned runs in the sixth inning Saturday and added an insurance run in the eighth for an 8-6 victory over Cal Poly, clinching the three-game baseball series at Baylor Ballpark.
Trailing 3-0, Cal Poly scored a run in the fourth on an RBI single by junior shortstop Peter Van Gansen.
After Baylor extended its lead to 5-1, the Mustangs caught the Bears at 5-5 with four runs in the fifth on an RBI single by sophomore left fielder Brett Barbier (pictured at right), a run-scoring groundout by junior first baseman Brian Mundell and a two-run home run to right-center field by senior right fielder Zack Zehner.
Cal Poly took its only lead of the game in the sixth on Barbier's two-out solo home run to left field, his first career homer as a Mustang.
Baylor took advantage of a fielding error to score a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth, regaining the lead at 7-6. A sacrifice fly by Adam Toth in the eighth provided the Bears with an insurance run.
Sean Spicer, the last of four Baylor pitchers in the game, retired all six Mustang batters he faced for a two-inning save. He also set the Mustangs down in order in the ninth inning of Friday's 8-6 win.
Joe Kirkland (1-0), the third Baylor pitcher of the game, earned the win, allowing one run and two hits in 2 1/3 innings.
Cal Poly used five pitchers. Starter Slater Lee went only two innings, allowing three runs and five hits. The loss went to freshman right-hander Kyle Smith (0-1) even though he struck out seven Baylor batters in 3 1/3 innings.
Smith was one of three true freshmen to pitch for Cal Poly. The others were Michael Gomez, who allowed one hit in 1 1/3 innings, and Erich Uelmen, who didn't allow a hit but walked four and gave up one run in 1 1/3 innings.
Barbier paced Cal Poly's 10-hit offensive attack with three hits and two RBI. Zehner and junior second baseman Ryan Drobny each added two hits.
Darryn Sheppard and Logan Brown both had two of Baylor's nine hits. Brown knocked in four runs with an RBI single, a two-run double and a bases-loaded walk. Toth added a two-run single.
Final game of the series will be played Sunday at 10 a.m. PST with sophomore right-hander Justin Calomeni of Cal Poly to face Baylor freshman right-hander Theron Kay.
