SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Freshman outside hitter Adlee Van Winden sent home a career-high tying 22 kills (for the second consecutive match) and sophomore Taylor Nelson recorded 52 assists as Cal Poly volleyball fell to UC Davis in five sets (25-19, 19-25, 25-17, 21-25, 13-15) on Saturday afternoon in Mott Athletics Center. Cal Poly slipped to 17-6 overall and 9-3 in conference, while the Aggies improved to 13-14 overall and 8-5 in Big West action.
Kaylin Squyres led UC Davis with 19 kills, Sophia Mar had 31 assists and Malia Bolko compiled 27 digs in the victory.
Saturday's loss was Cal Poly's first at home since Sept. 19 – and the first in conference play this season – and snapped a two-match win streak for the Mustangs.
Cal Poly junior middle blocker Taylor Gruenewald delivered 14 kills, while five Mustangs compiled double-figure dig totals, including senior Nicole Kessler (25 digs), freshman libero Katherine Brouker (23) and Nelson (18).
Cal Poly sophomore Raeann Greisen amassed 11 kills and sophomore libero Bailey Roach had 14 digs.
The opening frame featured two tie scores and one lead change, and saw Cal Poly jump out to a 16-11 lead after a Greisen kill. With the Mustangs leading 24-15, a kill by sophomore middle blocker Savannah Niemen collected the first set, 25-15, for Cal Poly.
UC Davis hit .333 during the second set, which included four kills from Emily Allen and three apiece from Squyres, Nicola Moore and Lauren Jackson. The second frame witnessed four ties and four lead changes before the Aggies won, 25-19.
Cal Poly grabbed the third set, 25-17, as consecutive kills by Van Winden and senior Hannah Schleis sealed the set triumph for the Mustangs. Van Winden used eight kills in the third and Nelson compiled 12 assists to lead Cal Poly to a two-to-one set advantage.
UC Davis, however, battled back to collect the fourth set, 25-21, forcing a decisive fifth. Squyres sent home four kills in the fourth, while Mar delivered seven assists.
During the fifth frame, Cal Poly took a 3-0 lead only to see the Aggies battle back and tally the next four points for a 4-3 advantage. A Van Winden kill pulled Cal Poly even at seven, and the two sides traded the next seven points, as UC Davis took an 11-10 lead. After an attack error by the Mustangs, UC Davis called timeout with a 12-10 advantage. Cal Poly drew within one after a kill by Greisen, only to have Squyres collect the final tally to win the fifth, 15-13, and the match victory with it.
