SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's soccer team held Long Beach State scoreless through the first half Thursday night, but the 49ers scored twice after the break to leave Alex G. Spanos Stadium with a 2-0 win.
In the 29th minute, Long Beach State (7-3-3, 2-0-0 Big West Conference) found an opening about five yards in front of the goal, as Victoria Bolden fired a centered shot, but Mustang senior center back Robin Mertens stepped in front for the team save.
Cal Poly senior forward Elise Krieghoff placed a shot on goal in the 37th minute, before freshman Ashley Kirchick also forced a save by Ashton McKeown in the 39th.
The 49ers took the lead in the 57th minute, when Mimi Rangel chipped a pass in the left side of the box ahead to Fatmata Kamara, who slotted it home inside the far post.
Chelsea Barry also put a shot on target in the 59th minute, as did Krieghoff in the 62nd and junior Megan Abutin in the 78th.
Long Beach State added the second score with 15 minutes remaining to full time, when Jordan Sanders arced a free kick taken from just in front of the right corner flag to the left post, where Vania Robles headed it in.
Mustang senior Alyssa Giannetti made her 72nd career start in goal, tying the school record originally set by Kristina Grigaitis from 1993-96.
The Mustangs (5-4-5, 1-2-0), who lost despite a 9-6 advantage in shots and a 6-4 margin in corners earned, will now head to CSUN for a road match with the Matadors beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday.
