Cal Poly Erupts for 7-2 Big West Conference Win Over Hawai'i

WAIPAHU, Hawai'i — The Cal Poly women's soccer team scored three first-half goals Sunday night and didn't let up from there, rolling to a 7-2 Big West win over Hawai'i in Waipi'o Peninsula Stadium to pick up three points in the conference table.
It was the Mustangs' 10th seven-goal showing all-time, and the first since a 7-0 neutral-site victory over Butler at the 2000 Montana Invitational — just one back of tying the school single-game offensive record versus Division I-level competition (reached twice).
Cal Poly (5-3-5, 1-1-0) made its first shot of the evening count, as Caitlyn Kreutz intercepted a pass in the back and capitalized by scoring in the 14th minute. It was already the sixth goal of the season for Kreutz, a freshman.
Then in the 22nd minute, senior Elise Krieghoff scored the 50th goal of her Mustang career, putting Cal Poly up 2-0 from a 1-v-1 opportunity after she ran onto a ball that junior midfielder Miki Foster lobbed ahead on her very first touch of the game.
McKenzie Flood then made it 3-0 from inside the box three-and-a-half minutes before the break, as the sophomore seized a deflected pass and aimed high.
The Rainbow Wahine got on the board in the 46th minute, when Tiana Fujimoto put away a shot inside the lower-right corner.
Almost immediately afterward, though, the Mustangs got one back, as senior Sara Epps scored unassisted from 20 yards out in the 48th minute. Epps, an all-conference attacking player in 2012 who battled back from a second season-ending injury in 2014, now has six career goals to go with her seven assists.
Krieghoff then added another strike on 59', via a through ball sent by freshman Ashley Kirchick. The brace was Krieghoff's 11th career multi-goal performance.
Krieghoff's goals total of 51, an in-progress school record, ranks as one of the five highest counts in the country among all active players.
UH's Keala Parker-Lee tacked on another score in the 79th minute from just outside the penalty area.
Mustang freshman Sydney Knauer then tallied on an 80th-minute rebound of a free kick, before Kreutz beat a defender for a tap-in with a minute-and-a-half remaining to register a brace of her own — already the third of her first season at Cal Poly.
Cal Poly's Alyssa Giannetti made saves in the 21st, 28th, 38th, 39th and 62nd minutes before giving way to fellow senior Heather Rouhier between the posts in the 77th.
Giannetti is now one start away from equaling the program record in goal (72), set by Kristina Grigaitis from 1993-96.
The Mustangs — who were two-and-a-half minutes away from a draw at first-place UC Davis on Oct. 1 before conceding a second-overtime golden goal — will return home to host Long Beach State at 5 p.m. Thursday in Alex G. Spanos Stadium before traveling to CSUN for a match beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday.
