CLOVIS, Calif. — Cal Poly juniors A.J. Inouye and Cliff Lekas both won events at the Bulldog Track and Field Invitational at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Saturday. In addition to the host, Fresno State, the meet also featured Cal State Northridge, Bakersfield, San Jose State, Pacific and UNLV.
Inouye (pictured at right), competing in his hometown, cleared 15 feet, 3 inches in the men's pole vault, the second-best height of his career.
Junior teammate Devin Bennett was second in the event, at a personal-record 14-9. (Bennett, a decathlete, also set a PR in the 110-meter hurdles for the second time in less than a month — now at 15.41 seconds.)
Lekas, formerly a school record-setter at Santa Barbara City College, had a time of 48.84 in the men's 400. It's also the Mustangs' fastest so far this spring. He came back later in the day to finish third in the 200, at 22.09.
Cal Poly also got a runner-up performance from senior John Guerrero in the 800. The Big West Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year's time of 1:52.66 is Cal Poly's best in 2014. Meanwhile, sophomore Erik Pinuelas also ran to a season-best 1:55.71.
In the women's 200, sophomore Ajah Love established a new PR, finishing in fourth, at 24.25. She not only had the Mustangs' No. 1 time in the event this year; Love is tied for No. 8 in school history.
Shelby Rothberg also had the best 200 of her freshman season (25.47).
Danny Shellworth, a freshman, took third in the high jump, getting over the bar at 6-6, a team-best mark thus far.
Sophomore Trevor Lien also added a PR in the 400 hurdles, at 55.30 (good for fifth place).
Hannah McDaniel, a junior, cleared 5-5.75, another season best, while coming in third in the high jump.
Seniors Clara Davis and Ferrin Peterson (who had a PR) both went to 12-1.75 in the pole vault, finishing fourth and fifth.
Additionally, sophomore Nick Bultman, while less than 5 feet shy of his career-best mark in the hammer throw, still placed third, at 176-0.25. (Throwing events were held at Warmerdam Field on campus.)
