
Trio of 74s Lift Cal Poly Women's Golf Team to Third-Place Finish

ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. — A round of par 73 by freshman Sophie Bergland lifted the Cal Poly women's golf team to a third-place final finish in the Firestone Grill Cal Poly Invitational on Sunday at Cypress Ridge Golf Course.
Bergland finished with a six-over-par 152 total for a seventh-place tie. Madison Hirsch (pictured at right) added a 74 and finished in sixth place with a 150 total while Jamie Corr also posted a 74 for a 154 total and a tie for 14th place.
Cal Poly carded a four-person final-round 299 for a 22-over-par 606 total, just six strokes behind team champion Santa Clara. The Broncos shot a 294 Sunday to climb from third place into the winner's circle.
Northern Arizona slipped into second place with a 604 total after posting a final-round 304.
Individual winner was Rebecca Bostrom of CSUN with her second round of 72 for a two-under-par 144 total. She finished two strokes ahead of Jacquie LeMarr of Northern Arizona. Meghan Shain and Kristin Le, both of Santa Clara, shared third place at 148.
In addition to Hirsch, Bergland and Corr, Cal Poly's scoring golfers included Jamie Binns with a 74 for a 154 total and 14th place, and Desiree Gillaspy with a final-round 79 for a 155 total and 18th place.
Cal Poly also entered a second team, which finished eighth with a 649 total. That squad was led by Jamie Harada with a 75 for a 157 total and 20th place, followed by Helen Davis with an 81 for a 159 total and 29th place, and Meridith Hirsch with a 78 for a 161 total and 32nd place.
Bergland, Harada and Gillaspy all were one over par on the par-3 holes for sixth place. Madison Hirsch was two over par on the par-4 holes, sharing top honors with two other golfers, while Corr was minus-3 on the par-5 holes, tied for No. 3.
Two eagles were carded in the final round — Madison Hirsch on the 273-yard par-4 seventh hole and LeMarr.
The Firestone Grill Cal Poly Invitational concluded the Mustangs' fall season.
