
Mustangs Win in Four at Fullerton to Even Big West Mark

FULLERTON – Freshman outside hitter Raeann Greisen recorded a match-leading 16 kills as the Cal Poly volleyball program picked up its second successive Big West Conference triumph with a 25-22, 25-16, 22-25, 25-21 victory versus Cal State Fullerton inside Titan Gym on Friday evening.
Junior Hannah Schleis (right) added 12 kills and hit. 476 for Cal Poly (7-7, 2-2), which held Cal State Fullerton (6-11, 0-4) to a .119 hitting percentage and built an early two-set lead by trailing just twice during the opening two games.
Facing an early 4-3 disadvantage during Friday's opening set, Cal Poly ripped off five of the next six points to snatch an 8-5 lead. Cal State Fullerton twice tied the scoreline before successive aces and a Mustang hitting error handed the Titans a 19-16 lead. However, hitting errors by Cal State Fullerton during four of the next five points squared the set at 20-20 before two kills by Greisen and one by Schleis down the stretch handed the opening game to Cal Poly.
Keyed by five Greisen kills, the Mustangs returned in set No. 2 to lead wire-to-wire. Cal Poly, which leapt out to a 6-1 lead, allowed the Titans to tie the set just once at 10-10 before outdistancing Cal State Fullerton with a 10-3 run.
Cal State Fullerton rebounded in set No. 3 and, in holding Cal Poly to a .125 hitting mark, trailed just once.
Cal Poly recovered in set No. 4 and, behind five more kills from Greisen, reversed an early 2-0 setback with a 7-2 run. Cal State Fullerton tied the match once more at 10-10, but Cal Poly scored four of the next five points to pull away.
Freshman setter Taylor Nelson added 42 assists for Cal Poly while freshman middle blocker Savannah Niemen chalked up a team-leading seven blocks.
Cal Poly wraps a two-match road trip at UC Irvine on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m.
