IRVINE – Freshman outside hitter Raeann Greisen chalked up a match-leading 15 kills, but the Cal Poly volleyball program saw its two-match Big West Conference win streak stopped by UC Irvine in a 25-23, 25-20, 25-18 defeat inside the Bren Center on Saturday evening.
Freshman middle blocker Caihla Petiprin added nine kills and hit .389 for Cal Poly (7-8, 2-3), which was held to a .195 team hitting percentage. Freshman setter Taylor Nelson contributed 32 assists in defeat for Cal Poly.
Neither side led Saturday's opening set by more than two points until successive kills by Anteater outside hitter Marisa Bubica helped the hosts pull into a 20-17 advantage. Cal Poly, despite hitting a match-best .256 in set No. 1, thrice pulled to within two points of UC Irvine, but failed to climb any further.
UC Irvine quickly erased an early Cal Poly lead in set No. 2 and, up 8-7, the Anteaters produced an 11-3 run to pull away. Cal Poly hit .250 in the set, but came no closer to the Anteaters than a pair of five-point disadvantages.
Set No. 3 produced nine deadlocked scorelines and six lead changes with UC Irvine grabbing the last at 12-11 following two straight Greisen hitting errors. The Mustangs twice recovered to knot the scoreline, but UC Irvine – which hit .297 on the night – eventually composed another 11-3 run to outdistance Cal Poly.
Cal Poly returns to Mott Athletics Center to open a two-match home stand beginning against CSUN on Oct. 17, 2014.
