SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Cal Poly sophomore forward Elise Krieghoff recorded her second hat trick of the season Friday night while helping to lead the Mustangs to a 3-0 win over San Jose State at Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
Krieghoff came into the match leading the country in goals, with seven.
In the sixth minute, senior midfielder Kacey Held led Krieghoff with a deftly placed 20-yard lob down the right side. Krieghoff capitalized for Cal Poly (4-0-0), taking the pass in stride and breaking free up the middle. She dribbled through the back line to fire a left-footed shot into the right corner, just inside the post.
Ten minutes before halftime, true freshman forward Megan Abutin threaded a pass ahead of the defense to set Krieghoff up on the right side again. This time, though, Krieghoff blasted a strike into the left corner, putting the Mustangs up 2-0.
The insurance goal came in the 87th minute, as Held and Sara Lancaster strung together a couple of passes on the right side of the pitch to find Krieghoff in the middle of the box. Her fifth and final shot of the night was aimed to the left again, upping her season tally to 10 goals.
A year ago, Krieghoff led the Big West Conference with 11 goals, and was 17th in the nation in goals-per-match average (0.73) on her way to earning conference freshman of the year honors.
Coming into the season, Cal Poly's most recent hat trick had been in 1999, when Kara Grondzik accomplished the feat.
The Spartans (0-5-0) weren't without their chances, outshooting the Mustangs 9-6 before the break, although just three of their 15 shots for the night were on goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Alyssa Giannetti logged her third shutout of the year.
Lydia Anderson had two shots on goal for the Mustangs, and Lancaster also took three shots, including one on goal.
Sarah Peplinski made seven saves for San Jose State.
Cal Poly will now travel to Texas to take on No. 9 Baylor at 5 p.m. Friday and then No. 24 Texas A&M at 5 p.m. Sept. 15.
The Mustangs are 4-0-0 for the first time since 2003.
