WACO, Texas – The Cal Poly women's soccer team lost for the first time this season on Friday night, 4-0 to No. 10 Baylor at Betty Lou Mays Field.
Baylor (6-0-1), which played North Carolina to a draw in last year's NCAA Tournament before being eliminated via a shootout, extended its overall unbeaten streak to 28 matches, which is the longest active unbeaten streak in the country at the moment. In addition to the No. 10 NSCAA ranking, the Bears were No. 7 in the latest TopDrawerSoccer rankings.
After an early foul on Cal Poly (4-1-0), Baylor's Taylor Heatherly took advantage of a free-kick opportunity from the left wing to set up Kat Ludlow on a fifth-minute header for a 1-0 lead.
Mustang freshman midfielder Lydia Anderson fired a shot on goal early in the first half, but Michelle Kloss came up with the save. Kloss entered the match having allowed just one goal for the entire season. Sophomore forward Elise Krieghoff and senior defender Braelyn Fetsch also placed shots on goal in the first half for Cal Poly.
Larissa Campos put Baylor up 2-0 on a penalty kick in the 27th minute. The Bears kept applying pressure before halftime, going up 3-0 in the 31st minute when Bri Campos tallied with a header off a cross by Justine Hovden from the right wing. Hovden then scored herself on a chip in the 43rd minute to make it 4-0.
Sophomore goalkeeper Alyssa Giannetti made eight saves for Cal Poly.
The Bears outshot the Mustangs 20-8 for the night, including a 12-3 difference in shots on frame.
Cal Poly will continue its road trip later this weekend, playing at No. 20 Texas A&M (4-2-1) at 5 p.m. Sunday on Ellis Field in College Station.
