COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Cal Poly women's soccer team shut out No. 20 Texas A&M in the first half Sunday night, but the Aggies broke through in the second to leave Ellis Field with a 4-0 win.
The Aggies (5-2-1), the defending SEC West champions, were ranked No. 12 in the preseason NSCAA poll. It was the second time in three days that Cal Poly played a team that advanced to the round of 16 in last year's NCAA Tournament, after having faced No. 10 Baylor on Friday.
Before the break, the Mustangs (4-2-0) limited Texas A&M to four shots on goal, and the sides each set up a pair of corner kicks.
Cal Poly sophomore forward Elise Krieghoff, who entered the weekend leading the nation in goals per match (2.5), placed a shot on frame in the 34th minute, but Jordan Day made the save to maintain the clean sheet.
Sophomore forward Sara Epps (right) also had a shot on goal for Cal Poly, threatening in the 47th minute. A little under three minutes later, though, Texas A&M's Liz Keester scored on an assist from Bianca Brinson off a corner by Kelley Monogue.
Then in the 55th minute, Monogue gave the Aggies a 2-0 advantage herself, cleaning up after a free kick by Meghan Streight was denied.
Texas A&M tallied an insurance goal in the 57th minute when Shea Groom converted a penalty-kick opportunity. With the Mustangs a player down following a red card, Monogue scored again in the 69th minute on a pass by Karlie Mueller for the final margin of victory.
Sophomore goalkeeper Alyssa Giannetti finished with seven saves for the Mustangs. Junior Heather Rouhier then came in for the final 24:11 and had three saves the rest of the way.
Senior midfielder Haley Walker and freshman midfielder Lydia Anderson also took shots for Cal Poly.
The Mustangs will travel to the Pacific Northwest next, for matches at Oregon State (1-6-1) at 7 p.m. Friday and at Seattle (2-2-2) at noon Sunday.
