SEATTLE – The Cal Poly women's soccer team continued its season-long six-match road trip with a 4-0 nonconference loss to Seattle at Championship Field on a rainy Sunday afternoon.
Stephanie Verdoia put the Redhawks (4-2-2) up 1-0 with a 24th-minute strike down the center of the pitch after Kat Prati and Taylor Ritzman drove in from the right side to chalk up assists. In the 32nd minute, Ava Ames scored unassisted to give Seattle a 2-0 advantage.
The Mustangs (4-4-0) created several opportunities late in the first half.
Sophomore forward Elise Krieghoff took a header in the 36th minute, and freshman midfielder Lydia Anderson, senior midfielder Kacey Held and senior defender Cristina Farrington also placed shots on frame during the next nine minutes.
Seven minutes before the break, Verdoia passed in from the right side to Jacqui Wallis, who took the ball down the middle of the field and shot to the left of the goalkeeper for a 3-0 lead. Julia Besagno then tallied the final score on a penalty kick in the 48th minute.
Krieghoff, who came into the weekend leading the nation in goals per match (1.67), fired another shot on goal in the second half.
Mustang sophomore goalkeeper Alyssa Giannetti, who opened the trip No. 1 in the Big West in saves (with 32 during the first six games of the season), made two in the first half Sunday. Junior keeper Heather Rouhier then came in for the second half and also made a pair of saves.
Cal Poly still leads the all-time series against the Redhawks, 2-1-0.
The Mustangs will play at Saint Mary's (3-7-0) at 4 p.m. Friday and at No. 22 Santa Clara (4-2-1) at 1 p.m. Sept. 29. Cal Poly will return home and open Big West play against Long Beach State (5-3-0) in Alex G. Spanos Stadium at 5 p.m. Oct. 4.
