MORAGA, Calif. – The Cal Poly women's soccer team outshot Saint Mary's 16-7 on Friday night, but the Gaels prevailed for a 2-1 non-conference home win.
Cal Poly sophomore forward Elise Krieghoff took three shots in the first five-and-a-half minutes, including two on goal.
Forty seconds later, though, the Gaels' leading scorer, Briana Campos, opened the scoring by heading in a cross from Caroline Beaulne.
The Mustang attack broke through in the 18th minute, as sophomore forward Sara Epps and senior midfielder Jordyn Zander set up Krieghoff, who fired from about 12 yards out to find the equalizer in the upper-right corner.
With the strike, Krieghoff — who came into the game third in the nation in goals-per-match average (1.25) — reached her goal total from all of the 2012 season (11) through just the first nine matches this year.
It was the third assist of the season for Zander.
Cal Poly (4-5-0) controlled possession for much of the first half, establishing an 11-2 shots advantage, including a 5-1 discrepancy in shots on frame. The Mustangs also set up six corner kicks before the break, all while not putting themselves in position to have to defend any.
Saint Mary's (4-7-0), however, posted the game-winner in the 68th minute, when Vicki Shimkus tallied from eight yards away via a free kick from Casidee Lynch.
Cal Poly created chances to force overtime late, including a corner opportunity that resulted in a header in the final 30 seconds of regulation, but the attempt was wide.
Sophomore goalkeeper Alyssa Giannetti made three saves for the Mustangs.
The Mustangs, whose current stretch of six consecutive away matches is tied for the longest road swing in program history, will have faced five 2012 NCAA Tournament teams by Oct. 10.
They'll take on the third of that group, No. 20-ranked Santa Clara (4-3-1), in Buck Shaw Stadium at 1 p.m. Sunday to conclude the non-conference portion of the schedule.
The Mustangs will then return to San Luis Obispo to host Long Beach State (6-3-0) in Alex G. Spanos Stadium for their Big West Conference opener at 5 p.m. Oct. 4.
