SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Cal Poly sophomore Madison Hirsch followed her record-breaking 66 Saturday with a 74 Sunday and beat a pair of Mustang teammates by 10 strokes for the individual title at the annual Firestone Grill Cal Poly Invitational on the Monarch Dunes Golf Course in Nipomo.
Hirsch's two-under-par 140 total on the 5,893-yard, par-71 layout included a tournament-leading eight birdies, a 4.11 average on the par-4 holes and a 4.25 average on the par-5 holes. She posted six birdies on the four par-5 holes over two rounds of play and also finished the tournament with 22 pars, two behind teammates Asia Adell and Montana Kosty.
The 66 posted by Hirsch (pictured at right) on Saturday shattered the school record by four strokes -- old mark of 70 was accomplished nine times -- while her 140 total for the tournament broke the 36-hole school mark of 143 set by Maddy Fletcher at Cypress Ridge on Nov. 1-2, 2009.
Adell and Taylor Yoshitake shared second place with 150 totals. Yoshitake carded rounds of 74 Saturday and 76 Sunday while Adell reversed those scores.
Another Mustang golfer, Morgan Thomas, shared fourth place with Malea Miller of CSU Bakersfield with 151 totals.
Cal Poly claimed the team title with a 301 total Sunday and a four-person 36-hole 591 total. The Mustangs' 290 total Saturday broke the school record by five strokes and the 591 total for 36 holes lowers the school mark by four strokes.
Cal Poly's "B" team actually posted the best four-person total Sunday with a 298 and settled for second place with a 618 total, 30 strokes better than third-place CSU Bakersfield.
Mustangs Montana Kosty (77-75--152), Jamie Corr (78-75--153) and Giovanna Ascolani (83-72--155) finished sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively.
On the men's side, Cal Poly let a six-stroke first-round lead disappear as Claremont-Mudd-Scripps overtook the Mustangs with a four-person round of 284 and the team title with a five-over-par 573 total on the 6,766-yard, par-71 course.
Cal Poly carded a 294 total Sunday and finished second at 577, followed by Cal Lutheran with a 287 Sunday and a 580 total.
Individual honors went to Kethan Reddy of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps with rounds of 66 and 67 for a nine-under-par 133 total, including 12 birdies and 21 pars. He finished four strokes ahead of Cal Lutheran's Mikey McGinn (69-68--137). Justin Beck of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps was third with back-to-back 70s.
Brandon Shaw was Cal Poly's highest finisher, carding another 72 for a 144 total and a tie for fourth place. Jordan Wright posted a 78 for a 146 total and a seventh-place tie with teammate Alex Romo, who had a final-round 75. Cam Price finished tied for ninth place with a final-round 75 and a 147 total.
Competing as an individual, Mustang freshman Justin De Los Santos finished in sixth place with rounds of 74 and 71 for a 145 total.
Shaw was one of four golfers to card an eagle in the tournament. Price finished second in the field with his 26 pars while Shaw was third at 25. Shaw was second in par-5 scoring at minus-three.
The Mustang women's team returns to action Sept. 29 through Oct. 1 at the Rose City Collegiate Tournament hosted by Portland State at the Langdon Farms Golf Club in Aurora, Oregon, while the Cal Poly men's team competes in the Bill Cullum Invitational hosted by Cal State Northridge on Oct. 21-22 at the Wood Ranch Golf Course in Simi Valley.
