
No. 18 Arizona State Shuts Down Cal Poly

TEMPE, AZ – The 18th-ranked Arizona State volleyball team shut down Cal Poly in three sets in the Mustangs first match of the Arizona State Marriott Invitational. ASU won by set scores of 25-19, 25-14 and 25-19. With the loss the Mustangs fall to 4-7 overall while ASU improves to 9-1.
Tournament play will continue on Saturday when the Mustangs take on Louisiana Monroe at 10 am in the morning session and Alabama State at 5 pm.
Senior outside hitter Chelsea Hardin led the Mustangs with eight kills while true freshman Taylor Gruenewald tallied six kills. Senior Jennifer Keddy added five kills as the team hit .073 for the match. Senior Megan McConnell led the team in digs (11) with Keddy tying a career-high with four solo blocks.
Macey Gardner led the Sun Devils with 10 kills with BreElle Bailey adding nine as the team hit .274 in the win.
In the first set after a quick point by the Mustangs, ASU scored four straight until a kill by McConnell. The Mustangs fought back and tied the set (11-11) on kills by Keddy and Hardin. ASU went on a quick 3-0 run to hold a 17-14 advantage. ASU expanded its lead, 22-16, forcing a second timeout. The Mustangs closed the gap, but ASU prevailed, 25-19.
The teams traded points to open the second set until ASU built a four point lead (13-9). Out of a Cal Poly timeout, ASU scored five-straight points (18-9) with the Mustangs calling a second timeout. ASU closed out the second set, 25-14.
ASU moved out to a 7-3 lead early in the third set and built a 15-6 lead with the Mustangs taking a timeout. The Mustangs came out of the break on a 6-2 run (17-12), but ASU would pull away for a 25-19 win.
