
Mustangs fall in Four Sets to Kansas State

BERKELEY, Calif. – The Cal Poly volleyball team lost in four sets to Kansas State. 25-21, 25-21, 27-25 and 29-27 in the team's second match of the Hilton Garden Inn Invitational hosted by Cal.
With the loss the Mustangs fall to 4-4 while Kansas State improves to 7-1. Tournament play concludes on Saturday when the Mustangs travel to Santa Clara for a 2 pm match.
Senior Chelsea Hardin led the team with 15 kills while fellow seniors Jennifer Keddy and Megan McConnell added 12 kills. True freshman Taylor Gruenewald added six kills. Sophomore Maddie Kuber dished out 33 assists while senior Kate Walters led the team with 23 digs.
Cal Poly hit .124 while KSU hit .188 for the match.
K-State jumped out to an early lead, 5-2, in the first set, but the Mustangs made a run pulled within one (9-8) behind a service ace by Kuber and a kill by Hardin and tied the set up at 12-12.
A Harding kill gave the Mustangs a 13-12. The teams traded points until K-State expanded the lead to 19-16 with KSU calling a timeout. KSU went on to win the set, 25-21.
In the second set the teams traded points until KSU built a 7-4 lead behind a kill by Tristan McCarty. KSU went on to win the set 25-21.
In the third set the teams traded points until Cal Poly gained a advantage, (14-12), but KSU built a 21-17 advantage, until Cal Poly fought back and tied it the set at, 22-22, on a kill be McConnell. Cal Poly took control and closed the set on kills by McConnell and Hardin for the 27-25 win,
In the fourth set, K-State built a 12-8 lead and held the lead until Cal Poly fought back and within one (23-23) when KSU closed out the set and the match. 29-27.
