BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Sophomore Elise Krieghoff scored four goals in leading the Cal Poly women's soccer team to a 5-2 win over CSU Bakersfield in a non-conference soccer game, Sunday night, in Bakersfield to improve to 2-0 on the season while the Roadrunners fall to 1-1.
The Mustangs return to action on Friday, Aug. 30 when the team will host Sacramento State at 7: 00 pm. Location of the game will be announced later in the week.
The Mustangs scored early and fast in the first half, but had to make a comeback in the final period after the Roadrunners tied the game with two goals early in the second period with three goals by Krieghoff in the final 32 minutes of play to close out CSU Bakersfield.
Krieghoff got the Mustangs on the board in the eighth minute of play when she beat CSUB goalie, Tori Ornela, off a long pass to give the Mustangs a 1-0 advantage. For Krieghoff it was her second goal of the season.
Cal Poly added a second goal in the eighth minute when senior Kacey Held beat the goalie from 15 yards out off a long pass from Jordyn Zander.
In the second half, CSU Bakersfield scored just as fast and as often as the Mustangs in the opening moments. CUSB scored its first goal in the 54th minute when Taylor Jordan hit an off-set piece from an assist from Erica Shelton.
The Roadrunners added their second and tying goal just over a minute later in the 55th minute when Hedda Regefalt hit a goal off a long pass.
Cal Poly retook for good the lead in the 58th minute when Krieghoff was able to put a head on the ball and score when she put it in the back of the net off a long cross.
Krieghoff scored her third goal of the game and her fourth of the season in the 79th minute when she redirected a shot from Held.
Krieghoff added her fourth goal of the game in the 82nd minute a rare assist from goalie, Alyssa Giannetti, who placed a long goal kick to the racing Krieghoff.
Overall Cal Poly outshot CSUB, 22-13, and had nine shots on goal compared to the Roadrunners eight while the Mustangs had four more corner kicks (5-1).
Giannetti earned her second win on the season when she tallied six saves while Ornela evened her record (1-1) with three saves.
