
Mustangs Open 2013 Campaign with 3-0 Win Over LMU

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – A pair of goals in the opening 20 minutes lifted the Cal Poly women's soccer team to a 3-0 nonconference win over visiting Loyola Marymount in the season opener for both teams Friday night at the Cal Poly Sports Complex.
Junior midfielder Sara Lancaster tallied the first score in the 11th minute off an assist from sophomore forward Elise Krieghoff. Then in the 19th minute, Krieghoff took advantage of a quick assist by senior defender Cristina Farrington to beat the goalkeeper to the left and provide a 2-0 advantage.
The Mustangs controlled possession for much of the first half, leading to a 13-3 shots discrepancy before the break. LMU bounced back to outshoot Cal Poly 9-3 after halftime.
Junior forward Lauren Heer came off the bench to add the final goal in the 74th minute, with senior midfielder Kacey Held assisting.
Two minutes later, Alyssa Giannetti made a diving save falling to her right, preserving the shutout. Giannetti, a sophomore second-year starter, finished with five saves for the Mustangs (1-0). Cal Poly utilized 19 players in the win.
Brittany Jagger made six saves for the Lions (0-1).
The Mustangs will travel to take the pitch at CSU Bakersfield at 7 p.m. Sunday before returning home to face Sacramento State at 7 p.m. Friday.
