No. 23 UC Irvine Clinches Series With 11-1 Win Over No. 22 Cal Poly

IRVINE, Calif. – Junior right-hander Andrew Morales earned his 10th victory with 10 strikeouts in the first four innings as No. 23 UC Irvine defeated No. 22 Cal Poly 11-1 in the final game of a three-game Big West Conference baseball series Sunday afternoon at Anteater Ballpark.
Morales (10-0) finished with those 10 strikeouts in seven scoreless innings, scattering four hits with one walk, for the Anteaters, who improved to 31-16 overall and 13-8 for third place in the Big West, winning the series against the Mustangs, two games to one.
Cal Poly fell to 33-16 and fourth place in the Big West at 12-9, tied with UC Santa Barbara.
UC Irvine broke out of the starting gate with two runs in the first inning, four in the second, one in the third and four more in the fourth for an 11-0 lead and never looked back.
Cal Poly scored its lone run of the game in the eighth inning. Freshman shortstop Peter Van Gansen drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a groundout and scored on freshman second baseman John Schuknecht's RBI double to left-center field.
Cal Poly's five hits included doubles by Schuknecht (pictured at right) and sophomore center fielder Jordan Ellis.
The loss went to Mustang starter Bryan Granger (5-4), who allowed four runs and three hits in 1 2/3 innings. The Mustangs used six pitchers in the game, with junior right-hander Chase Johnson tossing three scoreless frames, allowing one hit.
UC Irvine's 16-hit offensive attack included two doubles and a single by first baseman Connor Spencer for three RBI and one double and two singles by third baseman Taylor Sparks for one RBI. Center fielder Dominique Taylor added two singles and one RBI.
Cal Poly will play four games at home next week, hosting CSU Bakersfield on Tuesday night and Cal State Northridge for a three-game Big West Conference series Friday through Sunday in Baggett Stadium.
