SEATTLE, Wash. – Cal Poly's seven-game winning streak to open the 2013 baseball season has come to an end.
Despite outhitting Washington 6-4, the Mustangs dropped a 2-1 decision to Washington in the opening game of a three-game non-conference series Friday night at Husky Ballpark.
Cal Poly, which started a season 7-0 for the first time in its 19-year Division I history and for the first time since 1974 when it was in Division II, falls to 7-1 on the year. The Mustangs were ranked No. 27 this week by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and No. 28 by the National College Baseball Writers Association.
Washington is 3-6 after winning its home opener.
Sophomore right fielder Nick Torres (pictured at right) gave Cal Poly a 1-0 lead with a two-out home run to left field in the fourth inning. Washington answered in the bottom of the fourth on a two-out single by Jayce Ray followed by Robert Pehl's double into the left-field corner.
The Huskies scored the go-ahead run in the seventh on a single up the middle by Michael Camporeale.
Mustang junior left fielder Tim Wise flied out to deep left-center in the eighth inning and pinch-hitter Elliot Stewart hit a long fly ball down the left-field line in the ninth which went foul at the last moment.
