
Mustangs Fall to Cal State Fullerton on Senior Day

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Cal Poly volleyball team dropped a Big West Conference match to Cal State Fullerton in four sets on Saturday at the Mott Athletics Center. CSF won by set scores of 19-25, 25-22, 25-23 and 25-19.
With the loss the Mustangs fall to 11-16 overall and 5-9 in conference matches while CSF improved to 11-16 overall and 4-11 in conference matches.
The match opened with what could have been the best set played all season, Cal Poly won 25-19. The Mustangs recorded 20 kills on 38 swings with just one hitting error (.500) while CSF had 15 kills on 31 swings with two errors (.419). Both teams had the hot hand but it was sophomore Hannah Schleis that led the Mustangs with six kills on 14 swings. Senior Megan McConnell had five kills on eight swings.
The second set had CSF remain hot while the Mustangs cooled off. The Titans hit .323 in the set with Alyse Hensley leading the team with five kills. Cal Poly hit .179 with Taylor Gruenwald and Chelsea Hardin each with four kills.
The third set was a battle with the Mustangs opening with a 7-2 advantage. CSF got back in the set that saw four tie scores and two lead changes as the Titans hit .406. Cal Poly hit .281 with Hardin leading the way with six kills.
The fourth set saw the Titans take control early and never looked back. CSF hit .200 while the Mustangs hit .116. McConnell led the Mustangs with six kills in the set, but that would the extent of the Cal Poly offense in the set.
Overall in the set, McConnell paced the Mustangs with 15 kills on 34 swings (.324) while Hardin added 12 kills on 22 swings (.318). Schleis and Gruenewald were in double figures with 12 and 10 kills respectively.
Sophomore Nicole Kessler and senior Steffi Sooter each had 13 digs to lead the team with McConnell recording a double-double with 10 digs. Junior Shannon Garrett had 52 assists with Gruenewald leading the team with four assisted blocks.
Bre Boreland and Hensley each recorded 19 kills to lead the Titans. Julie Consani had 49 assists and 14 digs to lead CSF.
Prior to the match, Cal Poly honored the team's six graduating seniors in a brief ceremony. The group included Kate Walters, Megan McConnell, Jennifer Keddy, Chelsea Hardin, Steffi Sooter and Marianne Gera.
