SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The UC Irvine women's soccer team established a 2-0 halftime lead over Cal Poly at Alex G. Spanos Stadium on Sunday afternoon, and the Anteaters held on for a 4-3 win over the Mustangs in the second Big West Conference match of the year for each team.
It was the first home loss of the year for Cal Poly, which also had a five-match home unbeaten streak versus conference opponents snapped.
In the ninth minute, Zoya Farzaneh struck from the middle of the pitch after taking a Jenna Pellegrino pass in from the left side. UC Irvine (6-5-0, 1-1-0 Big West) added the second score in the 13th minute when Mady Solow used a free kick to set up Cami Privett in the center of the penalty area. Privett then turned and shot from about 10 yards out to score.
Cal Poly (5-7-0, 1-1-0 Big West) tallied its first score in the 46th minute on a direct free kick from sophomore forward Elise Krieghoff following a yellow card. Krieghoff aimed just inside the right post, beyond the reach of the diving keeper.
After taking a feed from junior midfielder Sara Lancaster, Krieghoff also accounted for the equalizer in the 51st minute with a right-footed blast into the back of the net from about 12 yards out.
The deadlock was short-lived, however, as in the ensuing minute, Privett crossed in from the right to set up Laura McGrail for a header. The Anteaters then took a 4-2 advantage in the 68th minute when Jasmine Nickelberry shot into an open net from about 25 yards out.
In the 80th minute, Cal Poly pulled to within 4-3 after sophomore forward Sara Epps (pictured at right) scored straightahead off a cross in from the right side by Krieghoff. The Mustangs couldn't force overtime in the final 10 minutes.
With her two goals Sunday, Krieghoff increased her season goal total to 15, thus tying the all-time single-season program record set by Kolleen Kassis in 1992.
Krieghoff, a three-time Big West Offensive Player of the Week this season, came into the week tied for fourth in the country in goals-per-match average before netting four over the two most recent games. Krieghoff also moved into No. 6 on the school's career goals list, with 26.
Lancaster also fired a shot on goal for the Mustangs, who outshot the Anteaters 18-15 overall on the day.
Cal Poly sophomore goalkeeper Alyssa Giannetti made six saves. Corey Tobin made three saves for UC Irvine.
The Mustangs will next play at Cal State Northridge at 7 p.m. Thursday before flying to Hawai'i for a match at 8 p.m. Oct. 13.
