NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – The Cal Poly women's soccer team picked up three points in the Big West Conference standings Thursday night with a 1-0 win at Cal State Northridge.
The Mustangs (2-1-0 Big West, 6-7-0 overall) netted the game-winner in the 29th minute, when freshman midfielder Kendra Bonsall (pictured at right) put away the first goal of her career on a header inside the far post, after a cross from sophomore forward Sara Epps.
Two minutes after halftime, Lyndsey Preston threatened for the Matadors (0-2-1 Big West, 5-8-1 overall), but sophomore goalkeeper Alyssa Giannetti came up with the crucial save for Cal Poly.
It was the only save of the night Giannetti would have to make, as the Mustang back line of Jordan Ansara, Allie Begin, Cristina Farrington (pictured in the background at right) and Jordyn Zander didn't yield any other shots on goal the rest of the way while working for their fifth shutout of the season.
Sophomore forward Elise Krieghoff (in the 16th minute), senior midfielder Haley Walker (69') and freshman forward Megan Abutin (82') also had shots on goal for the Mustangs in the victory.
CSUN was the fifth 2012 NCAA Tournament team the Mustangs have faced this season. The two battled to the closest of margins a year ago, with a 2-2 draw in San Luis Obispo before a 1-0 Matador win in the semifinals of the conference tournament.
Cal Poly will now fly to Hawai'i to take on the Rainbow Wahine (0-2-0 Big West, 5-6-0 overall) at 8 p.m. PST Sunday.
