WAIPAHU, O'ahu – A 106th-minute goal by Elise Krieghoff sent the Cal Poly women's soccer team to a 3-2 double-overtime win over Hawai'i, earning the Mustangs three more points in the Big West Conference standings on a humid Sunday night at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
It was the first time this year the Mustangs had gone into overtime.
With a draw looming, senior midfielder Kacey Held took advantage of a 2-on-1, passing ahead to Krieghoff, who fired just inside the left post, beyond the reach of diving goalkeeper Monk Berger, to end the match. It was the 16th goal of the season for Krieghoff — a sophomore who entered the weekend as the national goals leader — breaking Kolleen Kassis' school record that had stood since 1992.
On the golden goal, Held reached her sixth assist for the season, which leads the Big West.
Cal Poly (3-1-0 Big West, 7-7-0 overall) is now tied with UC Irvine (3-1-0, 8-5-0) and UC Riverside (3-1-0, 6-8-1) atop the conference standings, with nine points. The top four teams will advance to the Big West Tournament, which will be held Nov. 7-10 at Cal State Fullerton.
The Rainbow Wahine (1-3-0, 6-7-0) controlled possession early, and T.J. Reyno had a breakaway in the 16th minute, but senior defender Jordyn Zander came back to alter the pending shot before Alyssa Giannetti made the save.
In the 34th minute, Krieghoff headed a Haley Walker corner kick over to Kendra Bonsall. Bonsall then used a header of her own to find freshman forward Megan Abutin only a few feet away from the left post. Abutin capitalized, pivoting and then flicking a left-footed shot over the reach of the goalkeeper, into the upper-left corner, for her second score of the season.
It was the third point of the week for Bonsall, a freshman forward who tallied the game-winning goal in Thursday night's 1-0 win at Cal State Northridge. Krieghoff's assist on the first goal accounted for her 33rd point of the season. She's at 35 now, which exceeded the old program all-time single-season record by two.
Abutin wasn't done scoring. Two minutes after halftime, junior midfielder Sara Lancaster passed up the right side to Held, who lobbed a cross over the top to a skying Abutin. Abutin blasted a header into the right corner, putting the Mustangs up 2-0.
That cushion would be somewhat short-lived, however, as in the 54th minute, Tiana Fujimoto, the Big West's second-leading scorer, posted her eighth goal of the season, with a chip.
Giannetti responded with a key save in the ensuing minute. The sophomore, who got up to play the rest of the match after a second-half collision that left her and an opposing player on the ground, finished with six saves on the night.
The Rainbow Wahine found the equalizer with 1:19 remaining in regulation, when Krystal Pascua led Kama Pascua for a right-footed strike.
In the 100th minute, Allie Begin placed a shot just under the crossbar, but Berger leaped to make a deflection, forcing the second OT.
The Mustangs, now 7-0-0 this year when scoring first, will return home to host Cal State Fullerton (1-1-1, 6-4-4) at 7 p.m. Friday in Alex G. Spanos Stadium. That will be followed by a noon Sunday match at home against UC Riverside.
