SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Cal Poly women's soccer team earned a 1-0 win over Cal State Fullerton on Friday night in front of a crowd of 926 at Alex G. Spanos Stadium, moving into sole possession of first place in the Big West Conference standings.
In the first half, the Mustangs (4-1-0 Big West, 8-7-0 overall) were outshot 9-1 overall by the Titans (1-2-1, 6-5-4), although just one of those attacks was on goal, as Chelsey Patterson placed a shot on target in the 14th minute.
Cal Poly's best opportunity before the break came in the 34th minute, when freshman forward Megan Abutin threatened, but Lindsey Maricic, who came into the match leading the conference in save percentage (.880), came up with the save.
In the 52nd minute, Cal State Fullerton was whistled for a hand ball, resulting in a penalty-kick opportunity for the Mustangs.
Elise Krieghoff buried the PK, going low to the right post. It was the 17th goal of the season for Krieghoff, increasing the sophomore forward's own single-season school record. (Kolleen Kassis set the old program record, at 15, in 1992.)
Krieghoff came into Friday ranked No. 2 in the nation in total goals, as Illinois' Jannelle Flaws recorded a hat trick Thursday to take the national lead, with 18.
Cal Poly sophomore goalkeeper Alyssa Giannetti made two saves the rest of the game. Jordyn Zander, Jordan Ansara, Allie Begin and Cristina Farrington helped produce the sixth shutout of the year for the Mustangs, equaling a total last achieved in 2010.
Sara Epps and Kendra Bonsall also registered shots on goal in the second half for the Mustangs.
Cal Poly is alone in first place with 12 points in the standings after co-leader UC Irvine fell 2-1 to Long Beach State on Thursday and UC Riverside was edged 1-0 in overtime at UC Santa Barbara on Friday.
The Mustangs will return to the pitch at noon Sunday against UC Riverside at Alex G. Spanos Stadium. A class of eight seniors will be honored before the start of the game, the final home contest of the year for Cal Poly.
