
Anna Gorman Leads Cal Poly to Four-Set Win over CS Fullerton

FULLERTON, Calif. – Freshman Anna Gorman powered her way to 15 kills to lead Cal Poly to a four-set win on the road over Cal State Fullerton on Friday in a Big West Conference women's volleyball match. With the win, the Mustangs improve to 3-4 in conference matches and 9-11 overall. CSF falls to 9-10 overall and 2-5 overall.
The Mustangs won by set scores of 19-25, 26-24, 25-15 and 25-23.
The Mustangs will continue conference play on Saturday when the team travels to UC Riverside for a 7 p.m. match.
In her first true action of the seasonas an outside hitter, Gorman responded with 15 kills that came on 41 swings with just four errors (.286). Senior Megan McConnell was solid with her 12 kills, with freshman Taylor Gruenewald recording 11 kills on 26 swings.
Sophomore Maddie Kuber was solid with eight kills to go along with her 40 assists and 10 digs. Senior Steffi Sooter led the Mustangs with 28 digs. Senior Kate Walters added 11 digs. Senior Marianne Gera led Cal Poly with seven total blocks (one solo).
CSF had a pair of players with 10 or more kills led by Alyse Hensley with 22. Holland Crenshaw had 16. McKenna Painton led the Titans with 24 digs.
CSF had seven more kills than the Mustangs, 63-56, but Cal Poly served up four more aces (6-2) and outblocked CSF, 10-6. Cal Poly hit .227 for the match while CSF hit .181.
The first set opened with the teams trading points when CSF gained a three-point lead, 12-9, forcing a Cal Poly timeout. CSF continued on an 8-0 run and would hold a 16-10 lead before the Mustangs recorded a point on a kill by Kuber. CSF maintained the advantage, 21-14, and would close out the set, 25-19.
CSF opened the second set with the hot hand, 4-0, before Schleis got the Mustangs on the board. Cal Poly would come back to tie the set, 7-7, on a pair of kills by Gorman and a kill by Schleis. The teams traded points until a service ace by McConnell gave the Mustangs a two-point advantage (15-13). CSF came back and held an 18-17 lead with the Mustangs calling timeout. CSF added to its lead and held a 23-19 advantage when the Mustangs went on a 4-0 run to tie the set at 23-23. CSF would score the next point but a pair of attack errors by CSF and a kill by Gorman put away the set, 26-24.
The third set opened with the Mustangs holding a 5-1 lead on four kills by Gruenewald and a CSF timeout. A kill by Kuber gave the Mustangs an 11-4 lead. CSF pulled within three, 13-10, when McConnell served up a pair of aces and a 16-10 lead. A kill by Gruenewald gave the Mustangs their largest lead of the set, 20-12, when McConnell made it nine, 22-13, on a kill. Cal Poly would close out the set, 25-15.
In the fourth set it was not until Cal Poly held a 10-8 lead that either team could hold a two-point advantage. CSF would come back to tie up the set (10-10) with the teams trading points until the Mustangs gained a two-point lead (20-18) on a Groman kill. CSU responded with four straight points and held a 22-20 lead and the Mustangs calling timeout. Out of the break a McConnell kill cut the lead to one with the teams trading points. With the Mustangs trailing 23-22, they scored the next three points on a pair of kills by Gorman and the winner by Gruenwald for the set and the win.
