PALM DESERT, Calif. -- Senior Taylor Yoshitake is the seventh golfer in the 14-year history of the Cal Poly women's golf program -- and the second this year -- to capture individual honors in a tournament.
A final-round 70 on the 6,112-yard, par-72 Troon Course at The Classic Club on Sunday gave Yoshitake a share of first place in the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate with a three-under-par 213 total.
Yoshitake (pictured at right) carded the same 54-hole total as Clariss Guce of Cal State Northridge, who also recorded a final-round 70. The tie was broken on a scorecard playoff. Comparing cards starting from the 18th hole and working back, Guce bogeyed the 15th hole and Yoshitake made par, breaking the deadlock and giving the Saint Monica Catholic High School graduate her first collegiate championship.
Yoshitake and Guce, who were tied for the lead after Saturday's 36 holes of play, were the only golfers in the 108-person field to finish under par. Marissa Borja of Eastern Washington finished third at 218 while Isabella Leung of Hawaii was fourth at 220.
Mustang Madison Hirsch won the Firestone Grill Invitational at Monarch Dunes last month. Other Mustangs to win tournaments include Stephanie Yocum (three times), Jessica Huss (twice), Laura Howard, Alex Phillips and Hannah Brabb.
Hirsch set a school record with a 66 in the Firestone Grill Invitational. Previous mark was 70 set by Rebecca Norris in 2003 and matched eight times.
Make it 10 as Yoshitake carded a pair of 70s in the two-day tournament along with an opening-round 73 Saturday morning. Her 213 total shatters the school record of 220 set by Yocum at the Firestone Grill Invitational in 2009 and equalled by Yoshitake in the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic in Chandler, Ariz., in 2011.
As a team, Cal Poly finished 14th among the 20 schools entered in the event, posting a final-round 312 for a 940 total. Cal State Fullerton carded a final-round 305 and slipped past second-round leader Western Carolina for the team championship with a 909 total. Cal State Northridge (910) finished second, followed by Rollins College (912), Western Carolina (913) and San Francisco (913).
Hirsch posted a final-round 80 for a 239 total and 62nd place while Asia Adell finished with a 79 for a 246 total and an 85th-place tie.
Morgan Thomas closed it out with an 83 for a 248 total and a tie for 89th place while Phillips posted an 87 for a 254 total and a tie for 102nd place.
Competing as an individual, Jamie Corr finished tied for 80th place with a 245 total following a final-round 85.
Cal Poly wraps up fall play Oct. 28-29 by hosting the Cal Poly Invitational at Cypress Ridge Golf Course in Arroyo Grande.
