
Cal Poly Drops Two in the First Day of Utah Classic

SALT LAKE CITY, UT – In the second match of the Utah Classic Cal Poly lost for the second time on Friday when the team dropped a four set match to Utah Valley, 3-1, on Friday. Earlier in the day Cal Poly lost in three sets to Utah. Set scores in the loss to Utah Valley went 26-28, 26-24, 25-21 and 30-28. In the loss to Utah earlier in the day set scores went 25-13, 25-23 and 25-21. With the two losses Cal Poly falls to 1-9 on the season and will return to the court on Saturday when they face Nevada at 11 am.
Junior Holly Fanks led the team with 17 kills while senior Molly Pon had 12 kills with middle blocker Marianne Gera adding 10 kills in the loss. Hanna Schleis contributed nine kills with Megan McConnell adding eight kill s and 12 digs.
Freshman Maddie Kuber had 41 assists with five kills and 15 digs with Kate Walters adding 11 assists and three digs. Junior Steffi Sooter led the team with 22 digs while freshman Nicole Kessler added 12 digs.
As a team Cal Poly hit ,168 compared to Utah Valley's ,140 with the Mustangs holding a 14-11 advantage in team blocks.
Cal Poly held the advantage in digs, 84-65, but Utah Valley held won the battle at the net 14-11 and in aces 5-2.
With the score tied in the first set, 9-9) the Mustangs moved out to a 12-9 lead on a kill by Kuber and a assisted block by Gera and Pon and a solo block by Gera. Utah Valley took the lead on a service ace by Erica Nish to make the score 16-15. The Mustangs edged out to a 24-22 lead on a kill by Pon and an assisted block by Pon and McConnell. The Mustangs closed out the set on kills by Franks and Hanna Schleis, 28-26. The Mustang hit .255 in the first set win while Utah Valley hit .152.
In the second set Utah Valley moved out to a 5-1 lead. The Mustangs came right back to take a 7-5 lead on a kill by Franks with the set tied at 12-12 on a kill by Franks. With the teams trading points the score remained tied at 22-22 when Utah Valley scored two straight points to grab a 24-22 lead. Kills by Schleis and Gera tied the match forcing a Utah Valley timeout. Utah Valley would tie the set up and score the next two point to seal the win, 26-24, and even the match.
In the third set with the score tied at 8-8 and took the lead 10-9 on a kill by McConnell and kept the score tied 13-13 on an error by Utah Valley. The score remained tied at 18-18 on a kill by UT's Katie Fritzler. Utah Valley to a two point lead when Erica Nish put away a kill for a 20-18 advantage. Utah Valley maintained a 21-19 lead and took a 24-10 advantage on a kill by Bailey Farris kill and Utah Valley went on to a 25-21 third set win.
In the fourth set the Mustangs jumped to a 5-2 lead on an error by Utah Valley and made it 10-4 lead on a kill by Schleis. Cal Poly maintained a 12-7 lead on a Pon kill while Utah Valley made it a one point set, 12-11, on a 4-0 run and took an 18-17 lead on a Nish kill. The Mustangs came back on a service ace by Scheis and an attack error by McKenna Tait gave the Mustangs a 20-18 lead. Cal Poly improved on its lead and made it 23-19 on a kill by Pon. Utah Valley came back to tie the set at 25-25 until UV took control and won the set 30-28 to take the set and the match.
In the first match of the Utah Classic, Cal Poly lost to host Utah on Friday afternoon to set scores of 25-13, 25-23 and 25-21.
Franks led the team with eight kills on 16 swings. Schleis and senior Pon each added four kills. McConnell and Gera helped out with three kills each. Sooter led the team with 11 digs with Kuber adding nine. Kuber and junior Walter had 13 and 11 assists respectively. Kuber also recorded a team-high five assisted blocks with Gera credited with four.
Cal Poly hit .086 as a team while Utah hit .276 holding a 5-2 advantage in service aces and 9-6 edge in total blocks.
Utah moved out to a 7-2 lead to open the match in the first set forcing a Cal Poly timeout. The Utes maintained the margin holding a 14-9 lead midway through the set and went on to dominate the first set, 25-13. Utah hit .407 in the set while limiting Cal Poly to a -.040 hitting percentage.
In the second set with the score tied at 6-6 the Mustangs gained momentum behind a pair of kills by Franks and a service ace by Pon to hold a 12-9 lead. Utah surged back to pull within one (12-11), but a kill by McConnell helped the Mustangs maintain the lead. With the Mustangs holding a 14-12 Utah reeled off five straight points for a 17-14 lead with the Mustangs calling a timeout. Cal Poly hit .250 in the second set with Utah holding a slight advantage with a .286 hitting percentage.
Out of the timeout the Mustangs rallied on a kill by McConnell and a solo block by Schleis (17-16) and tied it at 18-18 on a kill by Franks. Cal Poly took a 21-19 lead on a kill by Schleis. Utah tied the set a 21-21but a kill by Kuber put the Mustangs back on top (22-21). Utah would score the next two points forcing a Cal Poly timeout with the Utes holding a 23-22 lead. Pon tied the set on a kill from the left side, but Utah would score the next two points to put the set away.
In the third set Utah broke open a close score with an 11-3 run to take command 16-10 when the Mustangs would make a run of their own closing within three, 21-24, before falling 25-21. Utah hit .189 in the final set, but Cal Poly was held to .000 hitting percentage.
