
Green Beats Gold 16-13 in Annual Intrasquad Match

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Falls by Jacob Leon and Sean Dougherty in the final two bouts highlighted the Cal Poly wrestling team's annual Green vs. Gold intrasquad meet Friday night in Mott Gym. The Green team headed by Brendan Buckley earned a 16-13 victory over the Gold squad, coached by Mitch Monteiro.
Leon, a freshman from Covina, Calif., pinned another freshman, Colt Shorts, in 2 minutes, 21 seconds, at 141 pounds while Dougherty (pictured at right), a returning junior, earned his fall in 2:12 against freshman Mitch Woods at 174 pounds.
There were seven bouts in the abbreviated dual meet, including two major decisions.
At 133 pounds, Devon Lotito, another freshman from Pennsylvania, was a 10-2 winner over Shorts while at 165 it was Woods with a 12-4 major decision against Paul Woodman.
Brandan Rocha, Xavier Johnson and Blake Kastl all won by decision. Johnson had the closest match of the night, overcoming a 2-0 deficit with a third-period reversal and riding time for a 3-2 decision over Dillen Rocha in a battle of 149-pound freshmen.
Cal Poly officially opens the 2012-13 season Thursday in Bakersfield with a pair of duals, facing Drexel at 5 p.m. and CSU Bakersfield at 8 p.m.
