BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Sean Dougherty won both of his bouts, but the youthful Cal Poly wrestling team fell to both Drexel and CSU Bakersfield in dual meets Thursday night at the Icardo Center.
Dougherty (pictured at right) posted a technical fall and a major decision as head coach Brendan Buckley's Mustangs dropped a 28-11 decision to Drexel followed by a 27-13 verdict against CSU Bakersfield.
In the match against Drexel, Cal Poly trailed 12-8 when the Dragons won three consecutive matches to pull away.
Mustang winners were freshman Connor King by a 6-4 decision at 165, Dougherty by a 15-0 technical fall at 184 and freshman Devon Lotito by a 9-4 decision at 133.
King scored two takedowns in the third period to snap a 2-2 tie. Dougherty chalked up three takedowns, a reversal and a pair of three-point near-falls on his way to a seven-minute technical fall while Lotito notched three takedowns, two escapes and 4:14 in riding time for his easy win.
At 125, Mustang freshman Evan McKirdy led 5-3 in the second period before surrendering a takedown and a reversal in a 7-5 loss to Drexel's Jake Goodwin.
Cal Poly wrestlers who won against CSU Bakersfield were Dougherty by a 10-2 major decision at 184, freshman J.T. Goodwin by a fall at 197 and senior Atticus Disney with a 5-2 decision at 285.
Those three wins trimmed CSU Bakersfield's lead to 18-13, but the Roadrunners won the final three bouts to clinch the dual meet.
Dougherty overcame an early 2-0 deficit with a takedown, pair of reversals and a three-point near-fall plus riding time for his 10-2 win over Reuben Franklin.
Goodwin scored a takedown 65 seconds into his match and pinned Frankie Hurtado six seconds later while Disney and Sammy Cervantes were scoreless after the first period before the Mustang heavyweight scored an escape in the second period and posted two takedowns in the final stanza for his 5-2 decision.
Cal Poly wrestling, presented by Meathead Movers, which used six freshmen in the pair of duals, will compete in the Roadrunner Open on Saturday at Selland Arena in Fresno. Competition begins at 12 noon and the Mustangs are one of 18 teams scheduled to compete. Arizona State, Drexel, CSU Bakersfield, Stanford, Navy and Northwestern also are in the field.
