
Mustangs Finish Tied for 12th in Cal Poly Invitational

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Junior Taylor Yoshitake (pictured at right) carded another 78 and was Cal Poly's top finisher, tied for 22nd place, as the Cal Poly Invitational women's golf tournament drew to a close Tuesday afternoon at Cypress Ridge Golf Course in Arroyo Grande.
With Yoshitake's 10-over-par 156 total, Coach Scott Cartwright's Mustangs finished tied for 12th place with Sonoma State among the 17 schools competing in the two-day 36-hole event on the 6,040-yard, par-73 course. Cal Poly posted rounds of 328 and 326 for a 654 total.
Gonzaga fired a final-round four-person 297 total to win the tournament with a 609 total, three strokes ahead of second-place Southern Utah. Northern Arizona was another three strokes back in third place.
Capturing top individual honors was Savana Bezdicek of Northern Arizona, who recorded back-to-back rounds of 73 for an even-par 146 total and a one-shot victory over three golfers at 147. Sadie Palmer of Southern Utah also had a final-round 73 while defending champion Balbina Guajardo of Santa Clara had a 74 and first-round tri-leader Spencer Heller of Sonoma State 76.
Audra Kepler of Cal State Monterey Bay and Savannah Vilaubi of UC Riverside also shared the lead after the first round with 71s, but both Kepler and Vilaubi posted 80s Tuesday to finish tied for 11th place.
Tuesday's best scores were one-under-par 72s by Alice Kim of Gonzaga and Clariss Guce of Cal State Northridge. Guce finished tied for sixth with a 149 total while Kim was tied for ninth at 150.
Mustang Alex Phillips carded another 81 for a 162 total and a tie for 42nd place while Kirsten Locke finished tied for 63rd after her final-round 83 for a 167 total.
Also scoring for Cal Poly was Morgan Thomas with a final-round 84 for a 169 total and 68th place. Asia Adell withdrew from Monday's round due to a back injury.
Four other Mustangs competed as individuals, led by Giovanna Ascolani with a final-round 82 for a 163 total and a 45th-place tie..
Laura Howard also shot an 82 for a 164 total and 50th place while Samantha Peters carded an 85 for a 172 total and 74th place. Montana Kosty also finished 74th with a final-round 88.
Average round for the tournament was 82.33. There were two eagles by Bezdicek and Utah Valley's Cassandra Lesa. Guajardo led the field in birdies with eight while Raychem Santos of Gonzaga posted the most pars with 27.
Guajardo topped the field on the par-5 holes with a six-under-par total while Bezdicek and Heller shared the lead on the par-4 holes at one-under-par. Kepler, Kaitlen Parsons of Northern Arizona and Sadie Palmer of Southern Utah all were one-under-par on the par-3 holes.
Cal Poly has completed its fall schedule and returns to action Feb. 17-19 at the Folino Invitational, to be held at the Industry Hills Country Club in City of Industry, Calif.
