
UC Davis Handles Cal Poly in Three Sets

DAVIS, Calif. – The Cal Poly volleyball team lost a Big West Conference match in Davis, falling in three sets to the Aggies on Saturday. Set scores in the win for UC Davis went 25-21, 25-11 and 25-20.
With the win UC Davis improves to 10-10 overall and 4-3 in conference matches while the Mustangs fall to 1-18 overall and 0-7 in Big West contests.
Junior Chelsea Hardin led the Mustangs with nine kills on 28 swings with senior Molly Pon adding eight kills. Freshman Maddie Kuber had four kills to go along with 13 assists and eight digs. Junior Megan McConnell led the team with 13 digs while junior Steffi Sooter had 12 digs. Junior Marianne Gera had four assisted blocks with Hardin credited with three.
UC Davis was led by Devon Damelio with 12 kills with Victoria Lee adding nine kills.
UCD hit .290 while the Mustangs hit .073. The Aggies held a 44-28 advantage in assists and a 52-44 edge in digs. UCD outblocked the Mustangs, 11-6.
In the first set UCD held a two point advantage until Hardin put away a kill to give the Mustangs a 6-5 lead. UCD came back to grab a 9-7 edge on an assisted block by Katie Quinn and Allison Whitson. UCD made it a four point lead, 14-10, on a kill by Devon Damelio. The Mustangs cut the lead to two on back-to-back kills by Franks (14-12). But UCD went on a 4-1 run to hold an 18-13 lead. The Mustangs marched back on a kill by Pon and a service ace by McConnell to cut the lead to three, 21-18, forcing a UCD timeout. UCD went on to pull out a 25-21 first set win. Cal Poly hit .064 in the set while UCD hit .136 in the win.
In the second set UCD moved out to a 5-1 led on a kill by Valerie Brain and kept the pressure up holding an 18-9 lead. UCD went on to a 25-11 win. Cal Poly hit .037 in the set compared to UCD's .483
In the third set the Mustangs held a 9-5 lead on a kill by Pon and assisted block by Kuber and Marianne Gera. Cal Poly maintained a 14-11 advantage on an ace by Walters and held an 18-5 lead on an attack error by UCD. The Aggies came back to tie the set at 19-19 and went on a 6-1 run to close the set for a 25-20 win. UCD kept the hot hand in the third set hitting .343 and limiting the Mustangs to a .114 hitting percentage.
