
Cal Poly to Host UC Riverside and Cal State Fullerton

This Week....: The Mustangs will continue conference play this week when they host UC Riverside on Friday, Oct. 19 and Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, Oct. 20. UC Riverside enters the match with the Mustangs 5-15 overall and 0-7 in Big West matches while Cal State Fullerton enters the week 10-10 overall and 4-3 in conference matches. Cal State Fullerton will play UC Santa Barbara on Friday before visiting San Luis Obispo.

What's coming up: Following the match with Cal State Fullerton, Cal Poly will hit the road for three conference matches at UC Santa Barbara (Oct. 27), Cal State Northridge (Nov. 1) and Hawai'i (Nov. 3).
• In 2012, Big West volleyball expands to 10 teams with the addition of the University of Hawai'i. The Rainbow Wahine competed in the Big West from 1985-95 and posted a 165-31 Big West record and an overall mark of 302-68.
... The Mustangs have not advanced to the postseason since the 2007 season... Overall the team has made 14 appearances and post a 13-14 overall record.

UC Riverside: The Highlanders enter the match 5-15 overall and 0-7 in conference matches. UCR is led by Ashley Cox with 3.32 kills per set. Amanda Vialpando is not far behind with 3.30 kills per set. In conference matches Cox has stepped up her game with 4.52 kills per set with Vialpando adding 3.41. Emily Borges sets the table with 10.61 assists per set while Megan Patterson records 4.21 digs per set. The Highlanders have taken two Big West teams to five sets, Cal State Northridge and UC Davis.
Cal State Fullerton: The Titans entered the week 10-10 overall and 4-3 in conference matches and played UC Santa Barbara on Friday. CSF is led by Kayla Neto with 4.05 kills per set while hitting .184. Bre Moreland adds a solid 3.42 kills per set with Lauren Kissell checking in with 1.74. Kaylynne Taeatafa dishes out 7.86 assists per set while Holland Crenshaw is the team leader with 4.54 digs per set. Cal State Fullerton opened the Big West season with three straight losses, but has turned it around, winning the last four matches, including a four-set win over Long Beach State last week.
Big West Play By The Numbers...Kills: In Big West Conference play the Mustangs are led by junior Holly Franks with 2.57 kills per set. Senior Molly Pon adds 2.48 and freshman Hannah Schleis with 2.44. Junior Chelsea Hardin contributes 2.37 kills per set. Juniors Megan McConnell and Marianne Gera add 1.30 and 1.00 kills respectively.
BWC.... Digs : Four players on the team are averaging better then two digs per set in conference play led by Steffi Sooter with 2.87 digs per set. Freshman Nicole Kessler and junior Megan McConnell each add 2.65 digs. Freshman Maddie Kuber is the fourth Mustang with 2.26 digs per set.
Overall...: Holly Franks leads the team overall with 2.80 kills per set followed by senior Molly Pon with 2.26. Junior Chelsea Hardin is third on the team with 2.10 kills per set. Freshman Nicole Kessler is the overall team leader with 3.11 digs per set followed by junior Steffi Sooter with 2.58 digs.
Freshmen Report Card: The Mustangs have a number of freshman contributing across the board.... Overall Hannah Schleis is fourth on the team with 1.93 kills per set followed by Maddie Kuber with 1.46.... Kuber also leads the team with 5.44 assists per set while adding 2.20 digs per set.... Nicole Kessler leads the team with 3.11 digs per set .....
Sometimes Two is Better then One....: Cal Poly has been using a 6-2 system on and off since the fourth match of the season or at least a variation of it... Freshman Maddie Kuber averages 5.44 assists per set with junior Kate Walters checking in with 5.22...
Playing the Best.... : The Mustangs have faced the No. 2 team (Texas) and the No. 19 team (San Diego) in the first week of the season.... Two weeks later the Mustangs faced No. 5 USC and No. 17 San Diego (again)... During the BWC season Cal Poly will face No. 8 Hawai'i twice....
Missing in Action.... : Jennifer Keddy, a two-time AVCA All-America selection, was named the 2011 Big West Conference Player of the Year when she led the conference with 4.06 kills per set is sidelined for the season with a shoulder injury. The 6-4 middle blocker was also third in hitting percentage with a .339 clip and blocks with a 1.22 average. Keddy's 4.85 points per set average ranks first in the Big West and 22nd in the nation. Her all-around skills include 1.76 digs per set with her career-high 19 coming against UC Irvine. She was also selected for the national A2 team.
Triple -Double.... : True freshman Maddie Kuber led the team to a five set win over Idaho when she tallied a triple-double with 15 kills, 30 assists and 10 digs.... Her kills came on 38 swings (.184) while adding one solo block and three assisted blocks...
Franks Earns All-Tournament in Utah Classic: Junior Holly Franks earned all-tournament honors when she averaged 3.45 kills per set... Franks had 17 kills against Utah Valley and 13 against Nevada... In the loss to Utah she tallied eight... For the tournament she hit .202 recording 38 kills on 84 swings....
True Freshmen Stepping up...: Nicole Kessler, libero, tallied 35 digs in the match with Idaho and is averaging a team-high 3.31 digs per set...... Nicole's aunt, Lynn Kessler, was a standout player for the Mustangs in the 80's under head coach Mike Willton...
STOCKTON. Calif. -- The Cal Poly volleyball team was swept in a Big West Conference match on Friday by Pacific in three sets on Friday in Stockton. With the loss the Mustangs fall to 0-6 in Big West Conference matches and 1-17 overall while the Tigers improve to 4-2 in the BWC and 16-3 overall. Set scores win the win for Pacific went 25-12, 25-14 and 25-12. The Mustangs return to the court on Saturday when the team travels to UC Davis for a Big West Conference match at 7 pm. Cal poly was led by senior Molly Pon and junior Chelsea Hardin with six kills each. Junior Holly Franks added five kills with junior Marianne Gera chipping in with four. Pacific was led by Kat Schulz with 12 kills while Megan Birch and Gabbby Cowden each added 10. Pacific outhit the Mustangs .404 to .057 recording 43 kills compared to the Mustangs 25 and held a 46-33 advantage in digs with Steffi Sooter leading Cal Poly with six. Pacific held a 6-2 advantage in service aces and had a 9-2 lead in blocks. Pacific won the first set, 25-12, behind a dominating .324 to .000 advantage in hitting. The Tigers kept up the pressure in the second set hitting .444 compared to the Mustangs' .214. In the third set Pacific kept the pressure on hitting .464 while limiting Cal Poly to a .000 hitting percentage.
DAVIS, Calif. – The Cal Poly volleyball team lost a Big West Conference match in Davis, falling in three sets to the Aggies on Saturday. Set scores in the win for UC Davis went 25-21, 25-11 and 25-20. Junior Chelsea Hardin led the Mustangs with nine kills on 28 swings with senior Molly Pon adding eight kills. Freshman Maddie Kuber had four kills to go along with 13 assists and eight digs. Junior Megan McConnell led the team with 13 digs while junior Steffi Sooter had 12 digs. Junior Marianne Gera had four assisted blocks with Hardin credited with three. UC Davis was led by Devon Damelio with 12 kills with Victoria Lee adding nine kills. UCD hit .290 while the Mustangs hit .073. The Aggies held a 44-28 advantage in assists and a 52-44 edge in digs. UCD outblocked the Mustangs, 11-6. In the first set UCD held a two point advantage until Hardin put away a kill to give the Mustangs a 6-5 lead. UCD came back to grab a 9-7 edge on an assisted block by Katie Quinn and Allison Whitson. UCD made it a four point lead, 14-10, on a kill by Devon Damelio. The Mustangs cut the lead to two on back-to-back kills by Franks (14-12). But UCD went on a 4-1 run to hold an 18-13 lead. The Mustangs marched back on a kill by Pon and a service ace by McConnell to cut the lead to three, 21-18, forcing a UCD timeout. UCD went on to pull out a 25-21 first set win. Cal Poly hit .064 in the set while UCD hit .136 in the win. In the second set UCD moved out to a 5-1 led on a kill by Valerie Brain and kept the pressure up holding an 18-9 lead. UCD went on to a 25-11 win. Cal Poly hit .037 in the set compared to UCD's .483 In the third set the Mustangs held a 9-5 lead on a kill by Pon and assisted block by Kuber and Marianne Gera. Cal Poly maintained a 14-11 advantage on an ace by Walters and held an 18-5 lead on an attack error by UCD. The Aggies came back to tie the set at 19-19 and went on a 6-1 run to close the set for a 25-20 win. UCD kept the hot hand in the third set hitting .343 and limiting the Mustangs to a .114 hitting percentage.
