BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Cal State Bakersfield overcame a 3-1 deficit with two runs in the sixth inning, one in the seventh and six in the eighth en route to a 10-3 victory over Cal Poly in the second game of a non-conference baseball series Saturday night at Hardt Field.
Kevin Younger tripled to the gap in right-center field to drive in two and tie the game at 3-3 in the sixth inning, Oscar Sanay singled through the right side of the Cal Poly infield in the seventh to break the deadlock and Martin Medina broke the game open with a three-run triple in the eighth.
With the win, Cal State Bakersfield clinches the series – the Roadrunners won Friday's game 3-1 – and improves to 32-22 for the season. Cal Poly falls to 27-25.
Junior southpaw Jonathan Montoya (8-5) earned the victory, allowing three runs and five hits in seven innings. He walked four and struck out two. Medina, who started the game as the Runners' designated hitter, picked up his seventh save with two scoreless frames, striking out the side in the ninth inning.
The loss went to senior right-hander Steven Fischback (7-3), who gave up four runs and 11 hits in 6 2/3 innings with one walk and six strikeouts.
The first four Cal State Bakersfield runs scored with two outs and the Roadrunners led off six of their eight innings with hits.
Cal Poly scored the first run of the game in the fourth inning on Mitch Haniger's sacrifice fly to right and, after Cal State Bakersfield tied the game in the bottom of the fourth, the Mustangs tallied single runs in the fifth and sixth for their 3-1 lead.
Elliot Stewart led off the fifth with a double and scored when Denver Chavez's safety squeeze bunt attempt resulted in a throwing error by Montoya at the plate.
Haniger opened the sixth with a double and eventually came home on Jimmy Allen's safety squeeze bunt.
Cal Poly's six hits included a single and double by Haniger (pictured above).
Cal State Bakersfield accumulated 17 hits. Sanay led the way with four singles while Younger, Paul McIntyre, DC Legg, Cael Brockmeyer and Tyler Shryock each added two hits.
Final game of the 2011 season for Cal Poly will be played Sunday afternoon at 1 o'clock. Sophomore right-hander Joey Wagman (4-2, 3.75 ERA) will start on the mound for the Mustangs against Cal State Bakersfield senior right-hander Mike McCarthy (7-6, 1.65 ERA).
