BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – One week after scoring 21 runs on 22 hits in a 21-0 victory at Pacific, Cal Poly ended the 2011 baseball season collecting just five runs and 16 hits in a three-game series at Cal State Bakersfield.
The Mustangs dropped a 3-1 decision to the Roadrunners on Sunday afternoon at Hardt Park as Cal State Bakersfield completed a three-game series sweep.
The Roadrunners improved to 33-22 on the season while Cal Poly finishes 27-26.
Senior right-hander Mike McCarthy (8-6) pitched eight-plus innings for the win, allowing one run and five hits with one walk and eight strikeouts. Martin Medina earned his ninth save by securing the final three outs.
McCarthy, who threw 117 pitches, had pitched eight innings for the win last Friday at Fresno State and seven-plus frames in losing at San Francisco on Tuesday.
The loss went to Mustang starter Joey Wagman (4-3) despite allowing just two runs and six hits in seven innings with one walk and six strikeouts.
Second baseman Evan Busby (pictured above) collected two of Cal Poly's six hits – a one-out single in the sixth inning and a two-out single in the eighth. Cal Poly did not get a leadoff man on base in the game until the ninth inning.
Cal State Bakersfield broke up the scoreless duel between McCarthy and Wagman with a run in the sixth inning. DC Legg doubled with one out and, another out later, Cael Brockmeyer doubled to score Legg.
The Roadrunners added an insurance run in the seventh as Tyler Shryock singled, Jeremy Rodriguez singled and Medina notched his 53rd RBI of the season, a sacrifice fly to right field.
Kevin Younger's groundout following a walk and a single gave the Roadrunners a 3-0 cushion in the eighth.
Cal Poly averted its fifth shutout of the season with a run in the ninth. DJ Gentile led off with a single, J.J. Thompson drew a walk and, after Mitch Haniger flied out deep to left-center field, Matt Jensen lined out to right field for a sacrifice fly and an RBI.
Cal State Bakersfield's seven hits included a single and triple by Younger and a single and double by Brockmeyer.
Cal Poly finished Big West Conference play last week in third place with a 15-9 mark.
