
Hot Shooting UC Davis Downs Mustangs, 81-61

DAVIS, Calif. – A hot shooting UC Davis Aggie team put a stop to the Mustang eight game win streak with an 81-61 win in Davis Thursday night in a Big West Conference basketball game. With the loss the Mustangs fall to 8-1 in conference play and 12-8 overall while UCD improves to 16-5 and 6-3.
Jonae Ervin led a trio of Mustangs scoring in double figures with 15 points with Rachel Clancy adding 12 and Abby Bloetscher 10. Ashee Burns making her first start of the season scored nine. Kayla Griffin scored only two points but led the team with eight rebounds.
Paige Mintun scored 16 points to lead the Aggies with Vicky Deely off the bench adding 15. In total 10 different UC Davis players scored in the game.
Cal Poly shot 38 percent from the field and made 44 percent from long range while the Aggies shot 58 percent from the floor and 62.5 percent from beyond the arc.
UCD corralled 34 rebounds compared to the Mustangs 26 while the Aggies committed one more turnover, 17-16.
In the first half after the Mustangs held a 10-9 lead on a pair of free throws by Jonae Ervin, but UCD went on a 12-2 run to hold a 21-12 advantage and never looked back on a layup by Samantha Meggison with 11:23 left in the half.
The Aggies made it 30-18 with 6:54 left when Vicky Deely converted a layup and made it 43-26 at the break when Mintun hit a three with three seconds left in the half after a Rachel Clancy turnover.
UC Davis shot 71 percent in the first half and made seven of nine from long range while the Mustangs struggled hitting 31 percent from the floor.
Cal Poly returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 5 when the team travels to Pacific to face the Tigers at 4 pm.
