
Saint Mary's Outlasts Women's Hoop, 65-62

MORAGA, Calif. – Four Mustangs scored in double figures led by Christine Martin with 15 points, but it would not be enough as the Cal Poly women's basketball team fell 65-62 on the road to Saint Mary's Sunday afternoon in Moraga. With the loss the Mustangs fall to 3-4 overall while the Gaels improve to 5-3.
Junior Kayla Griffin added 11 points while Caroline Reeves and Molly Schlemer each scored 10.
Cal Poly played without the services of starters Kristina Santiago and Brittany Woodard.
The Mustangs shot 42 percent from the floor and 39 percent from long range, but made only one of six in the second half.
SMC shot 37 percent from the floor and was limited to just two of 16 from long range.
The Gaels outrebounded the Mustangs 42-34 with the Mustangs committing one less turnover (21-20).
The Mustangs opened the game with Grffin hitting a three pointer off an assist by Ariana Elegado and held that lead throughout the half, holding a 35-30 advantage at the break.
The Mustangs held their largest lead of nine points (33-24) with 1:22 left when Martin hit a pair of free throws.
Cal Poly held the lead until 16:07 in the second period when Jasmine Smith hit a layup to give Saint Mary's a 36-35 lead.
The Mustangs responded with Molly Schlemer connecting on a layup and the lead. The teams exchanged leads with neither holding more then a two point advantage until 8:14 left in the game when Ashlee Burns hit a jumper for a 49-45 lead.
Cal Poly maintained the lead until 4:56 when Andrea Bailey hit a jumper to give SMC a 52-51 lead.
SMC made it a six point lead (57-51) at 4:18 with the Mustangs cutting the lead to two points on a pair of layups by Caroline Reeves and Ariel Gregersen with 2:48 left.
Saint Mary's made it 64-57 on a pair of free throws by Danielle Mauldin.
Martin hit a three with 19 seconds left cutting it to four (64-60) and after a free throw by SMC, she made the Mustangs final bucket with two ticks on the clock for a 65-62 final.
